Why the Cebu Recycler Installed Two Pallet Crushers

The customer's previous process depended heavily on manual dismantling before small grinders could accept the wood. That approach became increasingly inefficient as pallet volume grew. Nails and staples also made ordinary light-duty grinding equipment unsuitable for the incoming material.

The RIBPC 1250×450 crusher machine was selected specifically for rough size reduction of pallet-type wood waste. Installing two identical units gives the customer 8–10 T/H of combined crushing availability while also allowing maintenance to be scheduled without stopping the entire section. At eight effective hours per day and 300 operating days per year, the two-machine arrangement provides approximately 19,200–24,000 tonnes of theoretical annual crushing capacity.

The 4–5 T/H figure is applied to each crusher rather than presented as one combined machine capacity. Practical output changes with pallet density, wood species, moisture, board thickness, embedded metal and feed continuity. Thin softwood pallets can behave differently from dense hardwood packaging, so the operator should expect capacity to move within the stated range.

What Wood Waste Enters the Crusher

The project focuses on discarded wooden logistics pallets, timber packaging and clean untreated solid-wood offcuts from industrial and furniture-related operations around Cebu. These materials are visually inspected before crushing so unsuitable waste does not enter the fuel-chip stream.

Painted, chemically treated, heavily laminated or preservative-treated wood is separated rather than mixed automatically with biomass fuel feedstock. Plywood, MDF and other engineered panels also require separate assessment because adhesives and coatings affect their suitability for combustion.

Large furniture assemblies, long beams or bulky timber sections that cannot enter the 1250 × 450 mm opening safely are dismantled or reduced before feeding. The crusher is designed to eliminate unnecessary pallet dismantling, but the feed opening still defines the physical size that can enter the machine.

Handling Nails and Staples Safely

Wooden pallets frequently contain nails, staples and small ferrous fasteners. The RIBPC crusher uses a heavy-duty hammer-based crushing structure designed to tolerate this type of incidental metal better than an ordinary drum wood chipper machine or light wood hammer mill.

However, metal tolerance does not mean the downstream wood chips should contain nails. Crushing releases many fasteners from the wood, so the discharge conveyor is combined with magnetic separation to remove liberated ferrous material before the chips enter storage or fuel handling.

Large steel components, bolts, thick metal plates and unknown mixed demolition waste are not treated as normal feed. The customer still uses incoming inspection and sorting because removing excessive metal before crushing protects hammers, screens and downstream conveyors.

From Full Pallets to 20–40 mm Wood Chips

The most important size change in this project is from bulky pallet boards to approximately 20–40 mm chips. Pallets that fit the inlet are drawn into the crushing chamber by the feeding system. High-speed impact breaks boards, stringers and blocks into smaller pieces, which then leave the machine through the selected discharge configuration.

The 20–40 mm output is suitable for the customer's next-stage biomass fuel handling because the material is easier to convey, store and meter than complete pallets. It is not described as finished wood-pellet feedstock. If the customer later decides to produce biomass pellets, these chips would still require finer hammer milling before entering an MZLH pellet mill.

The crusher therefore performs coarse recycling and size reduction rather than complete fuel-pellet production.

Why Clean Pallet Wood Fits Industrial Biomass Use

The customer's actual downstream market is industrial biomass fuel rather than particleboard and MDF production. This distinction affects raw-material control. Clean untreated pallet timber can be prepared as a solid biomass fuel feedstock where the receiving boiler and local environmental requirements allow it, while painted, contaminated or chemically treated wood remains outside this stream.

Particle size is only one acceptance criterion. The customer also monitors moisture, foreign material and metal contamination. A crusher cannot convert unsuitable mixed waste into compliant biomass merely by reducing its size.

This is why sorting remains an important part of the Cebu facility even after the heavy-duty pallet crushers reduce the need for manual board-by-board dismantling.

Wear and Maintenance Depend on Feedstock Quality

Pallet crushing is more abrasive and impact-intensive than processing clean sawmill chips. Nails, dirt and irregular wood sections create higher mechanical loads, so hammer and wear-part inspection is part of routine operation.

The machine uses replaceable hammers and service-access points so worn components can be inspected without dismantling the entire crusher. There is no fixed hammer-life promise because operating life depends heavily on the amount of metal, sand, hardwood and other contaminants in the incoming pallets.

Operators also monitor bearings, feeding components, hydraulic systems and conveyor tension. Stable feeding is particularly important because forcing several dense pallets into the chamber simultaneously can create unnecessary peak loading even when total hourly capacity is within specification.

Why Cebu Is a Practical Location for the Project

Cebu has an established furniture and wood-products industry as well as substantial warehousing, manufacturing and logistics activity, creating realistic sources of pallets and clean wood packaging waste. The Philippines also maintains national standards work specifically related to pallets and wood used in pallet construction, reflecting the importance of palletized materials handling in domestic commerce and manufacturing.

Locating the recycler near Cebu therefore gives the project access to both pallet waste and industrial users capable of consuming prepared biomass chips, while avoiding the unrealistic assumption that all construction or municipal wood waste can enter the same fuel stream.

Shipping through Cebu International Port

The two RIBPC 1250×450 pallet crushers are prepared for export from Qingdao, China, with Cebu International Port used as the practical destination for a customer located in the Cebu industrial area. This avoids the unnecessary logistics step of importing the machines through Manila and then moving them to another island.

Before shipment, RICHI checks the receiving conveyor, equipment foundation, electrical load, crusher spacing, discharge conveyors, magnetic separation and chip-storage arrangement. Because two crushers work in parallel, the downstream metal separator and conveying system must be sized for the combined 8–10 T/H flow rather than only one machine.
