2.5–3.0 T/H Industrial Wood Pellet Machine in Canada

A British Columbia lumber processor integrates one MZLH678 industrial wood pellet machine to pelletize clean softwood sawdust, planer shavings and prepared chips.

2.5–3.0 T/H Industrial Wood Pellet Machine in Canada

OVERVIEW

A lumber-products company in British Columbia selected one MZLH678 Industrial Wood Pellet Machine in Canada to add a dedicated pelletizing module beside its existing sawmill operations. The site already handles spruce, pine and fir residues, with separate streams of green sawdust, kiln-dry sawdust, planer shavings and prepared chips feeding different routes before densification.

The customer did not need another complete biomass plant. Chipping, drying, fine grinding, conveying and bulk storage were already available, so the new investment concentrated on one higher-duty ring-die press with enough capacity for commercial production campaigns. The MZLH678 wood pellet mill provides about 2.5–3.0 T/H under suitable prepared-biomass conditions and fits the mill's existing material-handling scale.

A Sawmill Residue Project Needs More Than One Wood Feedstock Route

Interior British Columbia gives the biomass pellet project a strong softwood base, but the useful pellet feedstock does not arrive in one condition. Planer shavings and kiln-dry sawdust can be relatively dry and fine, while green sawdust carries more water and chip fractions need additional size reduction. The plant therefore routes each stream according to its actual moisture and particle condition before it reaches the pelletizer.

Bark-rich residue is kept under tighter control because bark can raise ash and mineral content compared with clean stemwood. The customer also excludes painted timber, treated lumber, plywood, MDF, particleboard and adhesive-bonded scraps from the clean fuel-pellet route. This keeps the pelletizing module focused on traceable untreated wood rather than treating every woody-looking material as equivalent biomass.

The project therefore differs from a stand-alone sawdust business buying mixed material on the open market. Here, the pelletizer sits beside a working lumber operation where by-product streams are already separated by process step. That allows dry planer fines to bypass unnecessary drying while wetter sawing residues receive moisture reduction before they enter the prepared-material buffer.

The 2.5–3.0 T/H range is a biomass reference rather than a fixed result for every wood stream. Green-sawdust share, bulk density, bark content, particle distribution, moisture, die specification and feeder stability all influence real output. The mill therefore tracks performance by prepared-material blend instead of assuming that kiln-dry planer shavings and wetter sawdust will run at the same rate.

MZLH678 biomass pellet machine was selected because the site's residue flow and existing auxiliaries can support a larger single press than the MZLH520 class. Installing a smaller machine would increase the operating hours needed to process accumulated dry fibre, while a larger multi-press module would exceed the present cooler, screening and storage duty. One 200 kW press gives the customer a practical industrial step without oversizing the entire area.

Green Sawdust, Dry Shavings and Chips Follow Different Preparation Paths

Green sawdust from primary sawing is checked for moisture before it enters the drying section, because a ring-die pelletizer cannot compensate for excess water. Kiln-dry sawdust and planer shavings may bypass drying when they already fit the pelletizing window. This bypass saves unnecessary thermal treatment and prevents already-dry fibre from becoming too dusty before compression.

Prepared chips need another route. Larger clean chips are first reduced to a fine fraction suitable for ring-die feeding, while fine sawdust that already meets the required distribution can bypass hammer milling. A typical hammer-mill screen may begin around the 4–6 mm class for trials, but screen opening is not treated as the exact size of every particle leaving the grinder.

The plant also separates foreign-material control from size reduction. Magnetic protection helps intercept ferrous pieces from sawmill handling, while stones, sand, aluminium and other non-ferrous debris require receiving inspection and suitable separation. Cleaner fibre reduces unnecessary wear on hammers, dies and rollers and also supports lower ash in the finished fuel pellet.

How the Industrial Wood Pellet Machine in Canada Fits the Existing Mill

  1. Clean sawmill residues are separated by moisture, particle condition and bark content.
  2. Green sawdust passes through drying when required, while suitable dry fines can bypass that stage.
  3. Oversized chips and coarse shavings are reduced before the pelletizing buffer.
  4. Prepared wood fibre is equalized and metered into the MZLH678 feeding section.
  5. The ring die forms the material into the selected 6 mm or 8 mm pellet specification.
  6. Hot pellets are cooled, screened and transferred to bulk storage or packing.

The wood pellet machine performs only the densification step. It does not replace drying, fine grinding, magnetic protection, cooling or product screening. This separation matters in an industrial sawmill retrofit because each upstream stream can enter the pellet area with a different condition. Stable operation depends on sending the press a prepared fibre blend rather than using motor power to overcome poor preparation.

The cooler must accept the real instantaneous discharge of the MZLH678. A press running near 3 T/H paired with an undersized cooler would simply move the production restriction downstream. Screening capacity is checked on the same basis, and fines are monitored as operating feedback because rising fines can point to moisture, die condition, fibre preparation or rough conveying rather than one isolated machine fault.

The 200 kW main motor is also not the total connected load. Arch-breaking, forced feeding, conveyors, cooling fans, screening, dust collection and any upstream grinding equipment add their own demand. The site therefore checks transformer capacity, motor starting, protection and cable sizing for the complete operating section, especially when the pelletizer runs at the same time as large sawmill drives.

Fuel-Pellet Quality Depends on Feedstock Control before the Ring Die

The plant uses 6 mm as its main commercial diameter because it suits many bulk and packaged wood-fuel applications, while 8 mm can be produced for contracts that specify a larger format. Die diameter selection is kept separate from fuel-quality claims. A 6 mm pellet is not automatically cleaner, denser or more durable than an 8 mm pellet when raw material and compression conditions differ.

Product quality is verified from the actual pellet lot through moisture, bulk density, mechanical durability, ash and calorific-value testing according to the buyer's required method. Softwood species can pelletize differently because resin, fibre structure and density vary, while bark and mineral contamination can raise ash. The machine shapes prepared fibre; it does not by itself certify a premium residential or industrial fuel grade.

Retail heating fuel and industrial boiler fuel may also have different commercial specifications. The customer therefore does not market every production run under one universal quality label. Feedstock segregation, bark control, laboratory results and contract requirements determine which market each pellet lot can serve, while the MZLH678 gives the mill the physical forming capacity needed to produce those separate grades.

Dust, Fire Risk and Maintenance Matter More at Industrial Duty

Fine dry softwood creates combustible dust, so the pellet area uses enclosed transfer, aspiration, filtration, grounding and disciplined housekeeping. Airflow is designed around actual duct resistance and pickup points rather than a generic collection percentage. Bearing condition, friction points and material buildup are inspected because fire prevention depends on the whole process area, not only on the ring-die chamber.

Wear planning follows processed tonnes and wood condition instead of a promised number of operating hours. Sand or bark-rich material can accelerate wear, while different die compression duties can affect roller and ring-die service intervals. The customer keeps critical wear parts available and schedules inspection around production campaigns so a single-press module does not become a maintenance bottleneck during heavy residue periods.

British Columbia logistics also influence spare-parts planning because the plant is inland from the main seaport. The MZLH678 can move from Qingdao through Vancouver and then continue by rail or truck toward the interior mill. Final freight routing depends on cargo dimensions and carrier planning, so the project does not assign a fixed transit period or imply that one shipment route applies to every Canadian biomass customer.

What Determines the Next Capacity Step

The customer can increase annual output first by using more available operating hours, provided dry prepared fibre and downstream capacity are available. A second pelletizer only becomes useful when material regularly waits ahead of the MZLH678 and the rotary dryer, wood hammer mill, pellet cooler, screener, storage and electrical system all have enough reserve to support a parallel press without creating another production restriction.

For another buyer evaluating an Industrial Wood Pellet Machine in Canada, RICHI Machinery would review wood species, bark share, green-to-dry residue ratio, incoming moisture, chip fraction, grinding requirement, target pellet diameter, hourly demand, operating schedule, dryer capacity, cooler capacity, electrical supply, dust-control system and available workshop dimensions before confirming the appropriate MZLH model and auxiliary scope.
