Small Animal Bedding Pellet Machine in Latvia for producing compact bedding pellets from clean pine and spruce residues. Explore MZLH350 specifications, raw material preparation, applications and RICHI Machinery's customized pellet production solutions.

The Small Animal Bedding Pellet Machine in Latvia is intended for a timber-processing business looking to turn clean pine and spruce residues into a saleable bedding product. The proposed customer already produces sawn timber and collects sawdust and planer shavings from its workshop. Rather than invest immediately in a complete pellet production plant, the business plans to add one ring-die pellet machine and use its existing material-preparation equipment wherever practical.
The selected model is the RICHI MZLH350, with a reference production capacity of 0.3–0.5 T/H and a 37 kW main motor. The machine will produce non-feed bedding pellets for small-animal housing and selected stable applications. The investment is designed around a relatively modest production target, allowing the customer to test local demand, make use of its own timber residues and develop a second product line without replacing its existing woodworking operation.

Latvia is a suitable setting for a wood-residue utilization project because forestry and wood processing are established parts of its economy. Pine and spruce are familiar commercial timber species, and sawmills, joinery workshops and other wood businesses generate different grades of by-products. The volume and composition vary between operations, but clean sawdust and shavings can provide a practical starting material for biomass densification.
The proposed customer is a small timber-processing business supplying sawn boards and planed timber to local construction and woodworking customers. Its production creates a steady stream of fine pine sawdust, spruce sawdust and light planer shavings. These materials are currently collected separately from the finished timber, but selling them loose does not always provide the most convenient commercial format.
The business is therefore considering a different outlet: compressed bedding pellets sold to pet-product retailers, small-animal breeders and selected equestrian customers. These buyers have different needs from industrial biomass-fuel users. Packaging, cleanliness, dust content, moisture and the behavior of the pellets during use may matter more than achieving the highest possible tonnage per hour.
This is why the project begins with a smaller pellet machine instead of a high-capacity industrial model. The customer does not need to process every tonne of sawdust immediately. A more measured approach allows production to follow confirmed orders while the business learns which pellet sizes and package formats local buyers prefer.
The proposed feedstock blend consists of approximately 60% pine sawdust, 25% spruce sawdust and 15% short planer shavings from untreated timber, measured by weight. This is a planning formulation for the illustrative project, not a verified recipe from an actual Latvian purchaser. The proportions can be adjusted after trials with the customer's own materials.
Pine sawdust forms the main fraction because it is expected to be readily available from the customer's sawing operation. Spruce sawdust adds another familiar softwood fraction, while short planer shavings provide a way to use a portion of the material collected during finishing. Long, curled shavings should not be fed directly into the pellet mill without suitable size reduction, since their shape can make feeding and compaction less consistent.
The material must come from clean, untreated timber. Painted or chemically treated wood, laminated boards containing unsuitable binders, demolition waste and mixed workshop sweepings are excluded from the proposed bedding formulation. The customer needs to maintain this separation from the beginning, because a low-cost residue is not suitable for animal bedding simply because it is wood-based.
Before pelletizing, the raw material should be screened to remove foreign objects and oversized fragments. If the shavings are too coarse, a hammer mill or other suitable size-reduction machine can prepare them for blending. An initial particle-size target of around 3 mm or finer can be used as a practical preparation guideline, although the final setting should be confirmed through material trials and the selected die configuration.
Moisture is another important consideration. The proposed operating target is approximately 10–15% moisture in the prepared mixture. If the feedstock arrives above 20%, it should be dried using the customer's existing dryer or another suitable drying system before entering the pellet machine. The MZLH350 is a pelletizing unit, not a dryer, so wet material should not be treated as ready for pressing merely because it can pass through the feeder.
Keeping pine sawdust, spruce sawdust and shavings in separate storage areas before blending also gives the operator more control. If the supply of one material changes, the formulation can be adjusted without automatically changing the entire batch. This is particularly useful for a small producer that needs repeatable product quality but does not require a highly automated raw-material handling system.
The RICHI MZLH350 is a ring-die biomass pellet machine configured for non-feed applications. In this project, it is intended to compress prepared wood residues into bedding pellets. It is supplied without a conditioner and should not be presented as a machine for manufacturing animal feed.
Its reference capacity of 0.3–0.5 T/H provides a manageable production scale for a timber processor entering a new product market. Actual output depends on the wood species, particle size, moisture, die specification, feeding stability and operating conditions. The rated capacity is therefore a selection reference rather than a guarantee that every wood mixture will run at the same rate.
The proposed equipment specification is:
The proposed 6 mm pellet diameter is within the machine's stated 4–12 mm finished-pellet range. It is a starting specification rather than a universal requirement for all bedding products. Smaller-animal bedding buyers may have different preferences from horse-stable operators, so the final die should be selected after discussing the intended application and testing representative material.
The machine's arch-breaker feeder helps reduce material bridging above the feed opening, while the forced feeder supports a steady supply into the pelletizing chamber. These features are useful when working with low-density sawdust and shavings, but they do not remove the need for appropriate particle preparation and moisture control.
The process begins with collecting clean sawdust and shavings from the existing woodworking operation. The material is inspected, screened and reduced in size where necessary. Moisture is checked before the prepared fractions are blended according to the working formulation.
The blend then enters the MZLH350. Inside the pelletizing chamber, rollers compress the prepared material through the holes in the ring die, forming cylindrical pellets. The wood particles bind through the combined effects of pressure, friction and the natural properties of the material. The resulting quality depends on the feedstock and operating conditions as well as the machine itself.
After pressing, the pellets should be cooled before screening and packaging. Cooling helps the product reach a more stable condition for handling. Screening removes excessive fines and broken particles that could affect the appearance and usability of the finished product. Where the process permits, some fines may be returned to production under controlled conditions.
The customer already has equipment for collecting and moving timber residues, so a complete new line may not be necessary. Existing conveyors, screens and size-reduction equipment can be retained if they are suitable for the planned material flow. A separate assessment should determine whether the customer needs to add a cooler, a fines screen or a small bagging unit to support consistent packaging.
For a small bedding-pellet business, the operator should record pellet diameter, moisture, fines content, production rate and electricity consumption during trial runs. These figures help establish whether the proposed blend is commercially workable. If the pine fraction changes significantly or the incoming shavings become coarser, the operator can identify the effect instead of relying on visual inspection alone.
The initial target market is small-animal bedding, including suitable applications for rabbits and other small animals kept in managed housing. Clean wood pellets are compact and convenient to store, portion and package. When exposed to moisture, they soften and break down, allowing the user to manage the bedding according to the animal-housing system and cleaning routine.
Not every wood pellet is automatically suitable for every species. Product selection must account for wood type, contamination risk, dust levels, pellet durability and the preferences of the intended buyers. The proposed pine-and-spruce blend should therefore be tested for its handling characteristics and evaluated against the requirements of the customers who will actually use it.
The same machine may also be capable of producing bedding pellets for selected equestrian applications, provided the product specification and raw material are appropriate. However, the customer should not assume that one pellet size, formulation or packaging format will meet the needs of both small-animal owners and horse stables. Different market segments may require separate product trials.
The project is not designed around fuel pellets or animal feed. Fuel production would require a separate assessment of the desired fuel specifications and the economics of the local market. Feed production is outside the intended scope of this machine configuration because the selected MZLH350 is supplied without a conditioner.
The main reason for buying one MZLH350 is that the customer already operates a timber workshop and has part of the necessary raw-material handling infrastructure. The missing operation is pelletizing. Purchasing a single machine allows the business to add this function without replacing equipment that already performs useful work.
This arrangement also limits the initial commitment while the customer establishes demand. The business can begin with a defined range of bedding pellets, supply samples to selected buyers and collect feedback on particle size, dust, packaging and ease of use. If repeat orders develop, operating hours or supporting equipment can be reviewed according to the available feedstock and actual sales.
The investment assessment should include more than the pellet machine's purchase price. Electricity, labor, drying where required, size reduction, screening, cooling, packaging, maintenance and storage all affect the cost per tonne. The commercial result depends on how much suitable residue is available, the cost of preparing it and the price that buyers are willing to pay for the finished bedding product.
For a smaller timber processor, storage and product handling deserve particular attention. Loose sawdust can be bulky, while finished pellets need to be protected from moisture and excessive breakage. The customer should plan the finished-product storage area and packaging method before commissioning so that the new machine does not create a bottleneck after the pressing stage.
Before confirming the machine configuration, RICHI Machinery can review representative samples of the customer's pine sawdust, spruce sawdust and planer shavings. Particle size, moisture, cleanliness and the proportion of each material help determine whether the proposed blend is suitable for pelletizing and whether additional preparation is needed.
The technical discussion should cover the intended pellet diameter, expected production hours, electrical supply, feeding arrangement and downstream cooling and packaging. These details help establish whether the MZLH350's reference capacity fits the customer's operation and whether existing equipment can support the planned production rate.
Die selection should be considered alongside the raw-material blend. Wood species and particle characteristics influence compression behavior, so a die configuration that works with one material cannot automatically be assumed to produce the same result with another. Material trials and clear product requirements provide a more reliable basis for selecting the final setup.
RICHI Machinery supplies individual biomass pellet machines as well as complete pellet production lines. For a customer that already has suitable preparation equipment, the project can remain focused on a single wood pellet mill. For a business that later needs a more integrated solution, the process can be customized to include equipment such as wood hammer mills, rotary dryers, conveyors, coolers, screens and packing machines according to the raw material, target output and available site space.
This flexibility is useful because not every customer needs the same level of automation. A small workshop may prefer to retain existing machinery and add one key processing step, while a larger operation may need a coordinated system for continuous feeding and finished-product handling. The equipment package should follow the actual production requirement rather than forcing every buyer into the same plant layout.
The planned shipment route is from Qingdao Port in China to the Port of Riga, Latvia. Riga is a major Latvian port and a relevant maritime entry point for imported industrial equipment.
Before dispatch, the machine's packing dimensions, shipment weight and delivery terms should be confirmed. The customer should prepare the installation area, electrical connection, feedstock storage and finished-product collection area before the equipment arrives.
Commissioning should include checks of mechanical alignment, electrical connections, feeder operation, die and roller assembly, safety guards and emergency stops. The first production runs should use the agreed dry wood blend. Recording output, pellet diameter, fines content and operating conditions will give the operator a baseline for routine production and maintenance.
The proposed project gives the timber processor a way to use part of its clean wood residues for a product aimed at a different customer group. Instead of relying entirely on loose sawdust sales, the business can evaluate whether small-animal bedding pellets provide a worthwhile additional outlet. The MZLH350 supplies the pelletizing stage while the existing workshop continues to perform the operations it already handles.
The customer's key evaluation points should be practical: whether the prepared blend feeds consistently, whether the pellets remain intact during handling, how much fines the process produces and whether local buyers accept the product. Production cost per tonne and repeat-order volume will determine whether the business should increase operating hours or invest in additional supporting equipment.
For a small timber processor, the benefit of this approach is the ability to test a new product without immediately committing to a large plant. The MZLH350 provides a defined starting scale, while the existing operation supplies the raw material and part of the preparation process. The business can then use actual production and sales data to decide whether expansion is justified.
The project feedback presented here is a proposed case narrative, not a verified quotation from an actual purchaser. Before publication as a completed customer case, the purchase details, measured output and customer comments should be confirmed against project records.
For businesses considering a small animal bedding pellet machine, the most useful first step is to identify the available wood species, confirm material cleanliness and moisture, and define the pellet diameter and intended customer. RICHI Machinery can then assess whether the MZLH350 or another model in the MZLH range is better suited to the proposed non-feed application.
