Pakistan has a large dairy sector, with approximately 50 million buffalo and cattle, but productivity remains low due to inconsistent feeding practices.
The cooperative we worked with represents 120 smallholder farmers, each owning 3 to 10 animals, with a collective herd of about 800 Nili Ravi buffalo and Sahiwal cattle. The cooperative had been producing a custom concentrate mix for its members, but the quality was highly variable. Their old vertical mixer, a locally fabricated unit, could not adequately distribute trace minerals or blend urea uniformly. Some farmers received feed with dangerously high urea levels, risking ammonia toxicity, while others received feed with insufficient protein.
Before contacting us, the cooperative had tried using a horizontal concrete mixer (designed for construction) to blend feed. That was not effective because the mixer could not handle powders and would leave unmixed material in the corners.
The cooperative manager had been quoted by a Turkish supplier for a ribbon mixer, but the price was far beyond their means. A livestock extension officer who had visited our factory recommended RICHI as a manufacturer with experience in South Asian conditions. The cooperative already had an animal feed hammer mill for grinding wheat and maize, and a small grinder for oilseed cakes. What they lacked was a proper batch mixer to produce a nutritionally complete concentrate.

After testing their ingredients—ground wheat middlings (2.0mm), crushed maize (2.5mm), rice bran (1.0mm), cottonseed meal, urea, dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, and a vitamin-mineral premix—we recommended the SLHSJ1.0B stainless steel twin-shaft paddle mixer with a 7.5kW motor and a batch capacity of 500 kg.
The stainless steel construction was essential because the cooperative uses urea, which can corrode carbon steel over time. The twin-shaft design also provides faster mixing than a ribbon mixer, which was important for the cooperative's production schedule. The cooperative purchased one unit as a standalone mixer to serve all member farms.
Balanced nutrition is not just about using the right ingredients—it is about distributing those ingredients evenly throughout each batch. Urea, for example, is a valuable source of non-protein nitrogen for ruminants, but the margin between a safe level and a toxic level is narrow. If urea is not uniformly mixed, some animals receive a dangerously high dose while others receive very little. Similarly, trace minerals like selenium and copper are essential in small amounts but toxic in excess. The cooperative's veterinarian had documented two cases of urea toxicity in member herds in the previous year, both traced back to poorly mixed feed from the old system.
The SLHSJ1.0B Paddle Mixer Machine uses twin counter-rotating paddle shafts that create a fluidized mixing zone. Unlike a vertical mixer that can leave dead spots at the bottom, the twin-shaft design keeps all particles in suspension. The cooperative's quality team tested the first 30 batches from the new mixer and found a coefficient of variation (CV) of under 5% for urea distribution—well below the 10% industry standard for high-risk ingredients.
The cooperative selected the SLHSJ1.0B with stainless steel construction. The 500 kg per batch capacity matches their production volume of about 2,000 tons of concentrate per year (eight batches per day, 250 operating days per year). The 7.5kW motor is chain-driven, which is reliable in dusty conditions and easy for local mechanics to maintain.

One significant challenge they faced was preventing urea segregation. Urea prills are lighter than ground grain and tend to float to the top of the batch if not properly mixed. The twin-shaft design solved this by keeping the material in constant motion, preventing the urea from separating. The cooperative also added the urea halfway through the mixing cycle rather than at the beginning, which improved distribution further.
The cooperative produces a dairy concentrate that member farmers mix with their own forage (wheat straw, corn stover, green fodder). The concentrate formulation is:
The concentrate is sold to member farmers in 40 kg bags. The cooperative manager reported that after switching to the SLHSJ1.0B, complaints from farmers about poor animal performance dropped substantially. Milk production across member herds increased by an average of 2 liters per buffalo per day, and the urea toxicity incidents were eliminated entirely. Farmers also reported that their animals had fewer digestive upsets and better reproductive performance.
We spoke with the cooperative manager about 15 months after delivery. Here is what he told us:
"This stainless steel mixer machine for balanced nutrition feed production has been essential for our cooperative. Before, we were taking a risk every time we mixed a batch with urea. Now we are confident that every bag contains the correct amount. The farmers trust our feed again.
The mill runs about four batches per day, which takes about two to three hours of mixing time. We have put about 500 hours on it. The paddles show minimal wear. The stainless steel construction has no corrosion, even with the urea.
The only issue we had was with the pneumatic discharge gate. The solenoid valve failed after about eight months. We replaced it with a locally sourced part – the valve is a standard size – and it has worked fine since."
The cooperative has since purchased a second SLHSJ mixer – a SLHSJ2.0A feed mixer machine with 1,000 kg batch capacity – for a new member service center being established in a neighboring district.

The cooperative manager later told us that the urea distribution study was the most convincing part of the pre-sale process. They had never seen anyone provide that level of technical detail before.
The cooperative is now planning to add a third mixer machine for a different product line: a calf starter feed that requires a finer grind and a different ingredient mix than the adult concentrate. The new mixer will be an SLHJ2B (stainless steel, 1,000 kg batch capacity) with paddle mixing action, which is better suited to the sticky molasses-based calf starter formulation. The cooperative intends to use the existing mixers for adult concentrate and the new mixer for calf feed, avoiding cross-contamination between products.
