Cattle Pellet Making Machinery in South Africa, SZLH350 cattle pellet mill, 8 mm beef cattle pellets, maize sunflower oilcake pelleting, single feed pellet machine

The mill’s mash orders still have to go out while a new pellet product finds its buyers. That is the practical issue behind this illustrative application of cattle pellet making machinery in South Africa. A regional feed manufacturer near Bloemfontein wants to offer bagged beef cattle pellets alongside its established mash range.
Its customers include cattle producers across the surrounding Free State farming districts and a smaller dairy customer base. The purchase centres on one SZLH350 ring die pellet mill. Existing ingredient receiving, grinding, weighing and mixing remain in use, with the pellet branch assessed separately for conditioning, cooling and packing.

The proposed pellet programme starts with 3,600 tonnes annually. At an acceptance target of 5 tonnes/hour of cooled, screened product, six productive hours provide 30 tonnes per pellet day. That requires 120 production days, leaving other days available for mash orders and maintenance.
This schedule gives the mill a way to group pellet orders into longer runs. Startup, cleaning and formula changes sit outside those six productive hours. A smaller press would require longer runs or more pellet days; a larger unit would need more orders and greater finishing capacity to justify its installation.
Commercial checks use the cost per saleable tonne, including steam fuel, electricity, die and roller wear, labour and packaging. A short order that needs a fresh setup carries a different cost from a full production day. Grouping compatible orders can matter as much as increasing the press rating.
Upstream checks cover the mixer machine’s complete batch cycle, bin capacity and transfer rate. A nominal mixer rating is insufficient if weighing or discharge repeatedly interrupts the pellet feeder. A buffer bin helps separate batch mixing from continuous pressing.
The intended product is a grain-based beef cattle concentrate pellet. Its principal ingredients are locally purchased maize meal, sunflower oilcake and wheat bran, with the mineral and vitamin package specified by the mill’s nutritionist. Dairy customers continue receiving their established mash products during the initial pellet programme.
A working grind target is approximately 2 mm mean particle size, checked by sieve analysis. Screen aperture alone does not define the meal’s particle distribution. Initial trials use dry mixed meal around 12–13% moisture, measured on a wet basis. The final blend and feeding directions require nutritional approval.
The proposed beef product has an 8 mm diameter and a target length of 12–20 mm. It supplies the concentrate portion of a feeding programme that includes suitable roughage. Its label and feeding instructions must make that role clear.
An 8 mm ring die fixes the diameter; the cutter controls length. Trials check that pellets survive conveying and a representative delivery without becoming excessively hard or producing unacceptable fines. Diameter changes require a different die, while die compression is selected for the actual formulation.
The manufacturer’s published 5–6 tonnes/hour reference places the SZLH350 feed pellet machine in the required capacity class. The project target remains subject to trials with this mill’s blend and a functioning cooling and screening circuit.
| Parameter | Specification or project basis |
|---|---|
| Pelleting equipment | One SZLH350 ring die feed pellet mill |
| Main motor | 55 kW |
| Feeder motor | 1.5 kW |
| Conditioner motor | 4 kW |
| Combined listed motor power | 60.5 kW, excluding auxiliary systems |
| Ring die inner diameter | 350 mm |
| Published output reference | 5–6 tonnes/hour; formulation-dependent |
| Acceptance target | 5 tonnes/hour after cooling and screening |
| Finished pellet dimensions | 8 mm diameter; target length 12–20 mm |
| Electrical design basis | 400 V, three-phase, 50 Hz; verify site supply |
The electrical contractor checks available capacity, motor starting, protection and cable sizing. The listed motor total is neither the complete plant load nor measured electricity use per tonne. Conveyors, aspiration, cooling and packing add their own demand.
Layout approval also covers conditioner inlet height, pellet discharge, foundation loading and access for die removal. Final dimensions and service clearances come from the approved equipment drawing before civil work begins.
A mash mill adding its first pellet press needs a suitable steam supply. The quotation therefore checks whether a boiler, water treatment and steam distribution already exist. Any new utility equipment is identified separately from the cattle feed pellet making machine.
Dry steam, condensate drainage and reliable pressure control help the conditioner deliver repeatable moisture and heat. An initial conditioning trial around 75–80°C provides a starting point; temperature, residence time and moisture are adjusted together against pellet quality and press load. Steam consumption must be established for the blend and operating conditions.
The pellet cooler machine, screen and bagging route must sustain the accepted output. Cooling trials check a discharge temperature within approximately 5°C of ambient and a provisional finished moisture target no higher than 13%. These are commissioning criteria requiring confirmation under the site’s conditions.
Acceptance follows a representative production run through 50 kg bag filling. Records include saleable tonnes, returned fines, pellet breakage and measured electricity consumption. Recycled fines are tracked separately. A retained sample and delivery-handling test help establish whether the product stays acceptable beyond the cooler outlet.
Staff planning allows one trained pellet operator, with packing and warehouse support from the existing team. Operators need procedures for routine stops, supply interruptions, cleaning and restart. Spare dies and roller shells are specified for the selected formulation and die size.
Shipment planning can compare Qingdao-to-Durban services with onward road transport to Bloemfontein. Packing, lifting arrangements, installation guidance and commissioning assistance belong in the agreed supply scope.
For cattle pellet making machinery in South Africa, RICHI Machinery’s proposal should begin with the mill’s pellet order schedule, representative formula and existing mixer details. Add the steam arrangement, electrical supply and available finishing equipment. Together, these show what the single press must deliver and which connections need attention before installation.
