Wood Pellet Plant Rotary Dryer in Slovakia

Wood pellet plant rotary dryer in Slovakia for drying sawdust and wood shavings before pelletizing, with a single-cylinder rotary drum configuration for an existing biomass fuel production plant.

Wood Pellet Plant Rotary Dryer in Slovakia

OVERVIEW

The wood pellet plant rotary dryer in Slovakia was selected by a biomass fuel manufacturer operating alongside the country's wood-processing industry. The business sourced sawdust and planer shavings from local timber processing operations and already had equipment for size adjustment, screening and pelletizing. The missing link was a dedicated drying stage that could handle variations in incoming moisture before the material reached the pellet press.

RICHI Machinery's proposed solution was one φ1.8 × 18 m rotary drum dryer, installed as an additional processing unit rather than as part of a completely new production line. The customer wanted to make better use of available wood residues, including damp sawdust and shavings collected from different processing batches. By adding a separate dryer, the plant could manage moisture more systematically and prepare a more consistent feedstock for wood pellet production.

Why a Slovak Wood Pellet Producer Needed a Separate Dryer

Wood processing is an established industrial activity in Slovakia, and sawdust, shavings and other clean wood residues can be used as raw materials for biomass fuel. Existing Slovak pellet manufacturers demonstrate that sawdust from local sawmills can be converted into wood pellets for heating markets. This creates a practical setting for a project focused on upgrading the drying stage rather than constructing an entirely new biomass facility.

The customer in this case was a medium-sized wood pellet producer with access to residues from nearby timber processing businesses. Its raw-material supply included sawdust from sawing operations and planer shavings from the preparation of timber products. These materials were suitable candidates for wood fuel production, but their moisture content was not always consistent.

Freshly generated sawdust, damp shavings and material stored under different conditions can behave differently during processing. Wet material requires more drying energy, while material that is already relatively dry may need a different feeding rate and residence time. If the dryer receives an inconsistent feed without adequate monitoring, the material leaving it may not be ready for stable pelletizing.

The plant did not need to replace its pellet mill or rebuild its entire material-handling system. It needed to bring the moisture of the prepared wood residues into a more suitable range before compression. A dedicated wood pellet plant rotary dryer was therefore a focused investment in an existing operation.

Equipment Selected for the Project: φ1.8 × 18 m Rotary Drum Dryer

The selected machine was a single-cylinder rotary drum dryer with a diameter of 1.8 m and a length of 18 m. This configuration was chosen for a wood pellet plant that already had upstream raw-material preparation and downstream pelletizing equipment.

The drum size provides a defined drying section, but the final hourly capacity cannot be established from the drum dimensions alone. Wood species, particle size, inlet moisture, target outlet moisture, heat source and operating schedule all affect the amount of material that can be processed. The project therefore required a material-based capacity calculation rather than an assumed output figure.

The temperature figures are the supplied equipment reference parameters. They are not a universal operating recipe for wood residues, nor do they mean that the wood itself should reach the inlet air temperature. Actual settings must be established according to the feedstock, drying duty, heat source and required outlet condition.

Raw Materials: Sawdust, Planer Shavings and Clean Wood Residues

The main raw material for this project was a mixture of sawdust and clean planer shavings. Sawdust was generated when timber was cut to size, while shavings came from planing and surface-finishing operations. These residues could be collected separately or combined, depending on their availability and physical characteristics.

For preliminary process planning, the customer considered a blend containing approximately 75% sawdust and 25% planer shavings by wet feed mass. This is an illustrative project assumption, not a verified customer formula. The final proportions would depend on the actual residue supply, particle geometry, moisture content and the pellet mill's requirements.

Sawdust generally provides relatively small particles, while planer shavings may contain thin, curled pieces with a larger apparent volume. The two materials can therefore behave differently in storage, feeding and drying. A mixture that looks uniform by volume may not have the same composition by mass, so the plant needs to use a consistent measurement basis when preparing production records.

The raw-material source also matters. Clean residues from untreated wood processing are more suitable for fuel pellet production than mixed demolition wood or materials containing coatings, adhesives, preservatives or other contaminants. The customer needed to keep unsuitable waste out of the feedstock stream and confirm that incoming residues matched the intended fuel product and applicable market requirements.

The drying machine was not intended to compensate for poor raw-material selection. Its job was to remove moisture from suitable wood residues so that they could proceed to pelletizing under more controlled conditions.

Why the Existing Pellet Line Needed a Drying Upgrade

Before this investment, the plant already had equipment for preparing and pelletizing wood residues. The new rotary dryer was intended to connect these stages more reliably by reducing the variation in moisture entering the pellet mill.

Moisture affects how wood particles behave during compression. Material that is too wet may be difficult to pelletize consistently and may require additional cooling or drying after forming. Material that is too dry can also change the way it compacts, so the aim is not simply to remove as much water as possible. The feedstock needs to reach a suitable condition for the specific pellet mill and wood mixture.

Adding a separate dryer gave the customer greater control over this part of the process. Instead of depending entirely on the incoming condition of sawdust and shavings, the plant could monitor the moisture entering and leaving the drying stage and adjust the feed rate and operating conditions accordingly.

This was particularly relevant when residues arrived from more than one wood-processing source. A batch of damp sawdust could require a different operating approach from a batch of partially dried shavings. The dryer would be managed around the material actually being processed rather than assuming that all incoming loads were identical.

How the Rotary Dryer Prepares Wood Residues for Pelletizing

The drying process begins when prepared sawdust and shavings are fed into the rotary drum. As the cylinder rotates, internal lifting elements raise and redistribute the material, exposing it to the hot drying medium as it travels toward the discharge end.

Heat transfers to the wet wood particles, and moisture evaporates into the exhaust stream. The material gradually moves through the drum, with the final moisture condition influenced by feed rate, inlet moisture, particle characteristics, airflow and residence time.

For this project, consistent feeding was an important part of the design. Excessively variable feed rates can make it harder to maintain stable drying conditions. The customer therefore needed to coordinate the upstream screening and conveying arrangement with the dryer inlet so that the drum could operate within its planned process range.

After drying, the material would be transferred to the next stage of the existing plant. Depending on the layout, this could include a buffer bin, a final size-adjustment stage or direct feeding to the pelletizing section. The dried feedstock should be checked before compression to confirm that its moisture and particle condition meet the process requirements.

The rotary drum dryer does not manufacture finished wood pellets by itself. It prepares the raw material for pelletizing. The pellet mill, cooler, screening equipment and packing system continue to perform their respective functions downstream.

Moisture Control Is More Important Than a Fixed Temperature Setting

The objective of a wood pellet plant dryer is to achieve the required feedstock condition without unnecessary energy consumption or damage to the material. A fixed inlet temperature alone cannot establish whether drying is complete. The result depends on how much water enters with the wood, how much material passes through the drum and how efficiently moisture is removed.

The supplied equipment reference lists an inlet air temperature of 400–500°C and an outlet air temperature of 70–80°C. These values must be interpreted as process reference temperatures, not as the temperature the wood particles should reach. The actual settings for sawdust and shavings need to be determined during engineering and commissioning.

For the Slovak plant, the practical target was a moisture range suitable for the downstream wood pellet machine. A value around 8–12% may be used as an initial discussion range for many wood pellet feedstocks, but the appropriate target depends on the raw material, pelletizing process and finished-product specification. It should be confirmed by testing rather than treated as a guaranteed result of the selected drum size.

The operator would need to compare incoming and outgoing moisture measurements, monitor feed rate and observe the material's condition. This creates a more useful operating record than relying on temperature readings alone.

Why the Single-Cylinder Configuration Was Considered

The customer was adding one machine to an existing pellet plant rather than planning a new industrial complex. A single-cylinder rotary dryer offered a defined drying section that could be integrated with the current material flow.

The final decision still depended on the drying duty. A larger drum does not automatically guarantee higher useful throughput, and the same machine can produce different results with different wood species or moisture levels. Before confirming the operating capacity, the plant needed to calculate the quantity of water that had to be removed per hour.

That calculation would start with the incoming wet feed rate and moisture content, then compare them with the desired outlet moisture. The resulting evaporation load, together with the heat source and operating hours, would determine whether the selected model matched the plant's production target.

This engineering step was central to the equipment selection. It helped keep the dryer aligned with the customer's existing pellet mill rather than creating a drying stage that could not supply the required amount of prepared material.

What Else Can a Rotary Drum Dryer Process?

Although this project focused on wood residues for fuel pellets, rotary drum dryers are used in other biomass and industrial drying applications. Suitability depends on the feedstock's physical properties, moisture level, heat sensitivity, abrasiveness and intended end use. The same drum cannot automatically be assumed suitable for every material without an application review.

These are potential applications of rotary drying technology, not a claim that the selected φ1.8 × 18 m unit can process every material without changes. A different feedstock may require a new assessment of the feed system, heat source, exhaust handling and process conditions.

RICHI's Engineering Work Before Shipment

Before finalizing the installation, RICHI's technical planning needed information about the customer's wood species, incoming moisture range, feed rate, target outlet moisture and downstream pellet mill. The expected proportions of sawdust and planer shavings were also relevant because particle geometry can influence material flow through the drum.

The plant needed to confirm the available installation area, foundation arrangement, feed-end access, discharge clearance and heat-source connection. The dryer had to fit between the existing raw-material preparation equipment and the pelletizing section without creating unnecessary handling points.

RICHI could provide the equipment drawings, overall dimensions, connection information and installation guidance required for site preparation. The agreed support scope could also cover start-up guidance, operator instruction and routine maintenance recommendations.

During commissioning, the important checks would include stable feeding, the condition of the material at the discharge, the measured moisture reduction and the compatibility of the dried feedstock with the pellet mill. Those checks would help the customer establish operating settings for its actual raw-material mixture instead of relying on generic assumptions.

Shipping the Rotary Dryer to Slovakia

The φ1.8 × 18 m rotary drum dryer was planned for sea shipment from Qingdao Port in China to the Port of Koper in Slovenia. Koper is a commercial seaport with cargo-handling facilities and connections serving Central European markets. The final shipping route and cargo arrangement would be confirmed with the freight forwarder.

Before shipment, the customer needed to confirm the installation dimensions, foundation preparation, hot-air system interface and the arrangement of conveyors feeding and discharging the dryer. The maintenance area also needed to remain accessible after the machine was installed.

RICHI's equipment documentation and technical guidance would support the preparation of these interfaces. The objective was to make the dryer fit the existing production arrangement and allow the customer to plan installation work before the equipment arrived.

Customer Feedback and Operating Priorities

For a wood pellet producer, the most useful assessment of a new dryer is whether it helps create a more predictable feedstock condition for the wood pellet mill. In this project scenario, the key evaluation points were the ability to handle different sawdust batches, the ease of monitoring moisture reduction and the compatibility of the new machine with existing equipment.

The customer also needed clear guidance on which operating variables to record. Incoming moisture, outlet moisture, feed rate, heat conditions and the condition of the dried particles provide a practical basis for reviewing performance. These measurements help distinguish a change in raw-material quality from a change in dryer operation.

No specific customer quotation or measured production result is presented here because a verified testimonial and commissioning record have not been provided. The project should be published as a confirmed customer case only after the purchase details and feedback have been checked against actual project records.

A Dedicated Drying Stage for Wood Pellet Production

The wood pellet plant rotary dryer in Slovakia was selected for a clear purpose: to reduce moisture in sawdust and planer shavings before the existing pelletizing stage. The customer already had equipment for preparing and compressing wood residues, so the new machine addressed a specific process requirement without expanding the project into a complete production line.

The selected φ1.8 × 18 m single-cylinder rotary dryer provides a defined equipment configuration, with reference drum speed of 3–12 rpm and the supplied hot-air temperature ranges. Its final throughput and outlet moisture must be confirmed from the actual wood feedstock, evaporation load, heat source and downstream pelletizing requirements.

For operators comparing a wood pellet plant rotary dryer, sawdust rotary dryer or biomass drying machine, the most useful information to prepare includes the wood species, the proportions of sawdust and shavings, the incoming moisture range, the required outlet moisture and the hourly feed rate. With these details, RICHI Machinery can assess the drying duty and recommend a configuration that matches the real production process.

The goal is not simply to install a large drum. It is to provide the right drying capacity for the material that the plant can actually supply, while maintaining a practical connection between raw-material preparation, moisture control and pellet production.
