This is a project regarding a small-scale fruit belt dryer machine in Costa Rica. A family-owned fruit farm in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, near the town of Liberia, was looking to diversify their income.
The farm grows mangoes, pineapples, and bananas. During peak season, they had more fruit than they could sell fresh. Surplus fruit was sold to processors at low prices or simply left to rot. The farm owner (let's call her Maria) wanted to add value by drying her own fruit into chips for local markets and tourist shops.
Maria explained the situation: "We have 5 hectares of mangoes and 3 hectares of pineapples. During harvest, we can't sell everything fresh. The processors pay almost nothing for surplus fruit. I wanted to make dried fruit chips – they sell for 10 times the price of fresh fruit. But I needed a dryer that was small enough for our scale and gentle enough to preserve color and flavor."
The farm produces about 50 tons of fresh mango and 40 tons of pineapple annually. They wanted to dry about 20% of their crop into chips.
Maria looked for a small-scale, affordable belt dryer that could handle 50-100 kg per hour of fresh fruit. She found the DHG-400 from RICHI.
Name:
fruit dryer
Country:
Costa Rica
Date:
2025
Capacity:
Flexible
Model:
DHG-400
Main Motor Power:
40kW
Raw Materials:
Mango, Pineapple, Banana
Target final moisture:
8-15%
From the belt dryer table, the DHG-400 (electrically heated) was selected. Why this model?
Maria chose the electric model because their farm had reliable electricity. The DHG-400 runs on 40kW – manageable for a small farm.
Costa Rica produces excellent tropical fruit. Maria's farm grows:
Fresh fruit moisture: 80-85%
Target final moisture: 12-15% for chewy chips, 8-10% for crispy chips
The fruit is sliced:
Mango: 5-7mm thick strips
Pineapple: 6-8mm thick rings or half-rings
Banana: 4-5mm thick slices
The DHG-400 small scale fruit belt dryer machine arrived at the Port of Limón – Costa Rica's main Caribbean port.
Shipping time from Qingdao to Limón is about 25-30 days (through the Panama Canal). The machine was packed in a 20-foot container with:
Customs clearance in Limón took about 5 days. Total landed cost was about 25% higher than the FOB price.
Installation took two weeks. Maria's husband built a simple concrete pad – the DHG-400 is about 6 meters long. They poured a 150mm slab.
The electrical hookup required 440V, 60Hz three-phase (Costa Rica uses 60Hz). RICHI provided a 60Hz-compatible motor. The 40kW heater required a 100-amp breaker – Maria's farm had sufficient power.
The first test run was with mango strips at 82% moisture. The mango was spread on the belt (single layer, not touching). Belt speed was set to 35 minutes per layer – total drying time 175 minutes (2.9 hours) across 5 layers. Air temperature: 60°C. Output moisture: 13% (chewy texture). Color: Bright orange. Flavor: Intense mango.
After six months of operation, Maria documented the following results:
Before (selling surplus fresh fruit to processors):
Fresh mango price: $0.30/kg
Fresh pineapple price: $0.25/kg
Surplus sales: 10 tons mango = $3,000, 8 tons pineapple = $2,000
Total surplus revenue: $5,000/year
After (drying into fruit chips):
Dried mango chips: 2.5 tons from 10 tons fresh (4:1 ratio)
Dried pineapple chips: 2 tons from 8 tons fresh (4:1 ratio)
Dried mango price: $12/kg (local market, tourist shops)
Dried pineapple price: $10/kg
Total dried revenue: (2,500 × $12) + (2,000 × $10) = $30,000 + $20,000 = $50,000
Processing cost (electricity, labor, packaging): $5,000
Net profit from drying: $45,000/year
Production output:
Input moisture: 80-85%
Output moisture: 12-15% (chewy) or 8-10% (crispy)
Throughput: 60-70 kg/hour of fresh fruit = 15-18 kg/hour dried
Daily output (8 hours): 120-140 kg dried chips
Annual output: 5 tons dried fruit
Value added:
Fresh mango: $0.30/kg
Dried mango chips: $12/kg (40x value increase)
Fresh pineapple: $0.25/kg
Dried pineapple chips: $10/kg (40x value increase)
The machine cost delivered approximately $18,000 USD. Payback period was about 5 months based on increased revenue.
Here's what Maria said after six months (paraphrased from a conversation, translated from Spanish):
"We were throwing away good fruit because the processors paid almost nothing. I knew dried fruit chips sell for good prices, but I thought drying equipment was too expensive.
"The DHG-400 changed that. It's small enough for our farm but works perfectly. We dry mango and pineapple at 60°C – the chips come out bright orange and taste like fresh fruit. The local shops love them.
"The 5-layer belt gives us 3 hours of gentle drying. The fruit doesn't burn or turn brown. The texture is perfect – chewy, not leathery.
"A few operational notes: The fruit needs to be sliced uniformly – we bought a small slicer ($500). The belts need cleaning after each batch – fruit sugar residue is sticky. We use hot water. The drying time varies by fruit – mango takes longer than pineapple.
"Would I recommend this machine? Yes. For any small farm with surplus fruit, this dryer pays for itself in months. We turned $5,000 of surplus fruit into $50,000 of dried chips."
Small farms have different needs than large processors. Here's why the DHG-400 works:
Compact size: 0.8m belt width, 6m length – fits in a small shed. No industrial building required.
Simple operation: PLC controls are easy to learn. Maria's workers learned in 2 days.
Low temperature (60°C): Preserves natural color and flavor. No sugar burning.
Multi-fruit capability: Can dry mango, pineapple, banana, papaya – whatever is in season.
Affordable: Entry-level price for small-scale producers.
Maria's drying parameters:
Mango (Tommy Atkins):
Slice thickness: 6mm
Temperature: 60°C
Drying time: 2.5-3 hours
Output: Chewy, sweet
Pineapple (MD2):
Slice thickness: 7mm
Temperature: 58°C (slightly lower, high sugar content)
Drying time: 2.5-3 hours
Output: Chewy, very sweet
Banana (Cavendish):
Slice thickness: 5mm
Temperature: 60°C
Drying time: 2-2.5 hours
Output: Crispy when fully dried
Maria bought a small manual slicer for $500:
Uniform slices dry evenly. No over-dried edges or under-dried centers.
Dried fruit chips are hygroscopic (absorb moisture from air). Maria packages them immediately:
The packaging equipment (heat sealer, bags) cost an additional $800.
Maria sells her dried fruit chips through:
The bright color and natural flavor differentiate her product from imported chips.
The DHG-400 shipped from Qingdao to Port of Limón, Costa Rica.
Shipping time from Qingdao to Limón is about 25-30 days. The route goes through the South China Sea, past Singapore, across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, across the Atlantic, and through the Panama Canal.
The machine was packed in a 20-foot container. Customs clearance in Limón took about 5 days. Total landed cost was about 25% higher than the FOB price.
The truck transport from Limón to Guanacaste was about 250km – roughly 4 hours.
After six months of running the DHG-400, Maria shared several observations:
Lesson 1: Uniform slicing is essential. A cheap manual slicer pays for itself in quality improvement.
Lesson 2: Don't overlap fruit slices. They will stick together. Maria's workers spread slices manually.
Lesson 3: Pineapple needs lower temperature than mango. Higher sugar content burns more easily. Maria runs pineapple at 58°C.
Lesson 4: Clean belts after each batch. Fruit sugar residue is sticky and can mold. Hot water and a brush work well.
Lesson 5: Package immediately. Dried fruit absorbs moisture from the air. Maria seals bags within 30 minutes of drying.
RICHI provided several services that helped Maria get the DHG-400 operational:
For a small farm with surplus fruit looking to add value, the DHG-400 is the ideal entry point.
Consider the DHG-400 if:
Consider a larger model (DHG-500) if:
For Maria's family farm, the DHG-400 was the right investment. It turned $5,000 of surplus fruit into $50,000 of dried chips, added value to their farm products, and paid for itself in 5 months.
If you're a small-scale fruit farmer with surplus production, don't sell your fruit to processors for pennies. Add value by drying it into chips.
The DHG-400 small scale fruit belt dryer machine is designed for farms like yours. Compact size, simple operation, low temperature (60°C) to preserve color and flavor. The 5-layer design provides gentle, uniform drying.
For small farm diversification, the math is simple: dried fruit chips sell for 40x the price of fresh surplus fruit. The dryer pays for itself in months.
