Our client manages a sizable timber processing facility on New Zealand's North Island, within a major forestry region. The operation produces kiln-dried lumber for both domestic and international markets.
Like all such mills, it generates substantial volumes of sawdust and wood shavings. For years, this material was sold locally at a low margin, primarily for animal bedding and landscaping.
However, the client identified a significant opportunity in the growing international market for industrial wood pellets, a clean-burning fuel used for power generation and large-scale heating, particularly in Japan and South Korea.
They had the raw material and the market, but lacked a critical link: the ability to efficiently and consistently dry large quantities of sawdust to the stringent moisture standards required for pelletizing and long-distance shipping.
This led to the decision to purchase a single, high-capacity rotary dryer. This was a new, strategic addition to their site, designed to function as the core of a new feedstock preparation line that would supply dried sawdust not only for their own future pellet mill plans but also as a premium dried product for other pellet producers.
The feedstock is a mix of radiata pine sawdust and shavings, a ubiquitous byproduct of New Zealand's forestry industry. The material, fresh from the planing mills, has an initial moisture content ranging from 35% to 50%.
The client's goal is to process this material and reduce its moisture content to a very consistent 8–10%.
This precise dryness is non-negotiable for two key reasons. First, it is essential for the subsequent densification process in a pellet mill, ensuring pellet durability and high calorific value. Second, it prevents biological degradation and heating during transportation in shipping containers.
