In the water-rich province of Friesland, the Netherlands, the managing director of an innovative wetland management and biomass company was tackling a unique resource challenge with industrial potential. The company held contracts to manage vast tracts of wetland reed beds, a crucial ecological service that involved harvesting common reed (Phragmites australis) to prevent overgrowth and maintain biodiversity.
Historically, the harvested reeds were a low-value byproduct, often left to decompose or used in limited, traditional crafts. The director envisioned transforming this abundant, annually renewable cellulose resource into a stable, dry commodity for two growing markets: as a high-fiber, peat-free growing medium component for the massive Dutch horticultural sector, and as a raw material for green biocomposite boards.
The critical barrier was the reed's extremely high and persistent moisture content (often 55-65% even after cutting) and its tough, fibrous nature, which made natural drying slow and unreliable in the humid Dutch climate. To create a viable commercial product line, they needed a robust, continuous drying system specifically capable of handling long, stringy, and wet biomass.
This led to the strategic investment in a purpose-built reed belt dryer. The decision was made to commission two specialized reed belt dryers as the foundational technology for their new processing facility. This dual-line approach was essential to provide the necessary scale to handle seasonal harvest peaks and to allow for separate processing streams for different end-uses (horticulture vs. biocomposites), which required slightly different final moisture specifications.

For this Dutch company, the business model relied on processing large, seasonal volumes of a challenging, unconventional material. Investing in two reed belt dryer units was a deliberate strategy to ensure throughput and flexibility.
One belt dryer for reeds could be optimized to produce a coarser, less finely dried output for biocomposite production, while the other could be tuned to create a more thoroughly dried and consistently sized reed for horticultural substrate blending.
Two machines also provided vital redundancy; given the seasonal and weather-dependent harvesting schedule, the processing window was concentrated, and any mechanical downtime during this period would be financially catastrophic. Two lines guaranteed continuous operation during the crucial post-harvest processing months.
The raw material is harvested common reed, cut into 1-2 meter lengths and coarsely chopped. It is dense, fibrous, and has an initial moisture content typically between 50-60%.
The drying intent is efficient reduction of this high, bound moisture to a stable 12-18% (depending on end-use) while maintaining the reed's structural integrity and fibrous qualities. The process must handle the long, potentially tangled material without frequent clogging, and must penetrate the dense, waxy stems to drive out internal moisture effectively.
After an extensive search for biomass drying specialists across Europe, RICHI Machinery was selected for our demonstrated experience with difficult, high-moisture fibrous materials and our willingness to co-engineer a solution.
