10–12 T/H Poultry Pellet Mill for Continuous Feed Processing in Bangladesh

OVERVIEW

A poultry feed manufacturer in Gazipur, near Dhaka, Bangladesh, was looking for a more reliable way to maintain production through long operating shifts. The company produces approximately 200,000 tons of broiler and layer feed annually. Its existing pelleting section relied on older equipment that required frequent maintenance stops and die changes, making it difficult to maintain a predictable production schedule as demand increased.

The company already had hammer mills for maize and rice bran, twin-shaft paddle mixers with a reported 4,000 kg batch capacity, coolers and bulk load-out equipment. Replacing the entire production line was unnecessary. The immediate requirement was to add reliable pelleting capacity that could operate for extended periods while allowing the maintenance team to service one machine without automatically stopping the other.

After reviewing the production requirements, RICHI proposed two SZLH420 ring die pellet mills, each equipped with a 110 kW main motor. The poultry pellet mill for continuous feed processing was intended to handle a substantial share of the plant's pelleted feed production while working with the existing upstream and downstream equipment.

Project Configuration at a Glance

The project was planned around two feed pellet mills rather than a complete replacement of the factory's feed manufacturing system.

Project Parameter Configuration
Installation location Gazipur District, Bangladesh
Customer profile Commercial broiler and layer feed manufacturer
Total plant output Approximately 200,000 T/Y
Pellet mill model 2 × SZLH420
Main motor power 110 kW per unit
Reference capacity 10–12 T/H per unit, depending on formulation and operating conditions
Pellet diameters 3 mm, 3.5 mm, 4 mm and 4.5 mm
Existing upstream equipment Hammer mills and twin-shaft paddle mixers
Downstream equipment Coolers and bulk load-out systems
Project scope Additional pelleting capacity integrated into the existing factory

The 200,000 T/Y figure represents the manufacturer's overall feed production, not the output of the two new pellet mills alone. At a combined nominal rate of 20–24 T/H, two units operating for 24 hours a day and six days a week would have a theoretical weekly capacity of approximately 2,880–3,456 tons before accounting for downtime, product changes and upstream supply constraints. Actual production depends on the operating schedule and the capacity of the complete process.

What Makes Continuous Pellet Processing Different?

Continuous feed processing is not simply a matter of keeping a pellet mill switched on for longer. The machine must receive a steady supply of conditioned mash, maintain a suitable motor load and discharge pellets without creating a bottleneck at the cooler or conveying system.

For this Bangladesh project, the principal operating requirements were:

Two pellet mills provide operational flexibility, but they do not automatically guarantee uninterrupted factory production. Upstream material shortages, a shared cooler failure, steam-system problems or a blocked conveyor can still stop the entire pelleting section. The layout and supporting utilities therefore need to be designed around the intended operating schedule.

Machine Selection and Product-Specific Settings

The SZLH420 was selected for its reference capacity range and its suitability for integration into an established feed manufacturing plant. Different ring dies were specified for broiler starter, grower, finisher and layer feed, allowing the factory to produce several pellet sizes without purchasing a separate machine for every product.

Feed Type Pellet Diameter Reference Output per Mill Conditioning Temperature Steam Addition
Broiler starter 3 mm 8–9 T/H 85–90°C 6–7%
Broiler grower 3.5 mm 9–10 T/H 85–90°C 6–7%
Broiler finisher 4 mm 10–11 T/H 80–85°C 5–6%
Layer feed 4.5 mm 10–12 T/H 70–75°C 3–4%

These figures are reference process settings rather than guaranteed production results. Actual output depends on the ingredient formula, grinding fineness, moisture, die compression ratio, conditioning performance and required pellet durability. Steam addition and temperature must be adjusted to the actual feed formulation rather than applied as fixed values to every batch.

Broiler starter feed may also require crumbling, depending on the product specification and the age of the birds. Where a crumble product is required, the production line needs a suitable crumbler and screening arrangement in addition to the pellet mill.

How the Two-Mill Arrangement Supports Production

The plant planned to distribute products between the two SZLH420 units according to its production schedule. One machine could prioritize starter and grower formulations while the other handled finisher and layer feed. The assignment could be changed according to orders, die availability and maintenance requirements.

  1. Prepare the raw materials. Maize, rice bran and other ingredients are ground or otherwise prepared to the particle size required by the relevant feed formula.
  2. Mix the ingredients. The existing twin-shaft paddle mixers blend the ingredients into a uniform mash. Batch timing must be coordinated with the demand from both feed pellet machines.
  3. Buffer the conditioned feed supply. Suitable surge bins, conveyors and controlled feeders help bridge the difference between batch mixing and continuous pelletizing. The number of mixers and their actual cycle times must be sufficient for the required combined throughput.
  4. Condition and pelletize. Mash enters the conditioner, where moisture and heat are adjusted before the material reaches the ring die.
  5. Cool and transfer the pellets. The finished pellets are cooled to a suitable handling and storage condition before bulk transfer or packaging.
  6. Schedule maintenance. Operators inspect wear components and lubrication systems according to operating hours and actual equipment condition, coordinating maintenance with the production plan.

The existing 4,000 kg batch mixer machine capacity is an important design consideration. Batch size alone does not establish whether the mixers can continuously supply two pellet mills at 20–24 T/H combined. The actual mixer cycle time, number of available mixers, transfer rate and surge-bin capacity must be checked before confirming the maximum sustained line output.

Raw Materials and Feed Product Requirements

The plant manufactures broiler and layer feed using ingredients common to the Bangladeshi market. Maize and rice bran are important energy ingredients, while soybean meal and fishmeal contribute protein. Vegetable oil, wheat-derived ingredients, limestone and vitamin-mineral premixes are incorporated according to the nutritional requirements of each product.

Ingredient Group Role in the Formulation Processing Consideration
Maize Major energy source Grinding fineness influences conditioning, pellet formation and throughput.
Rice bran Energy, fiber and other nutrients Moisture and oil content can affect mash flow and pellet durability.
Soybean meal Primary protein ingredient Particle distribution and inclusion rate affect the finished feed.
Fishmeal Protein and other nutrients Quality and inclusion rate should be controlled through the feed formulation.
Vegetable oil Energy and formulation adjustment Excessive or poorly timed addition may affect mash flow and pellet binding.
Limestone and premixes Calcium, vitamins and minerals Uniform distribution is important, especially in layer feed.

Starter, grower, finisher and layer feeds have different nutritional requirements. Formula development should be handled by a qualified feed nutritionist, and ingredient proportions should not be copied between products without checking the intended bird age, nutrient specifications and local ingredient quality.

Maintaining Stable Operation During Long Shifts

Extended operation places greater demands on routine inspections and maintenance planning. The production team needs to identify early signs of abnormal temperature, vibration, lubrication problems or changes in pellet quality before these issues develop into unplanned stoppages.

Maintenance intervals should be based on the actual machine specification, operating conditions and inspection results. A fixed bearing-life figure or lubrication flow rate should not be assumed without confirmation from the equipment documentation.

Cooling Capacity and Downstream Coordination

One of the important considerations in long-hour pellet production is the capacity of the equipment after the pellet mill. Hot pellets need sufficient cooling and airflow to reach a suitable temperature and moisture condition for handling, storage and transport.

For the Bangladesh plant, the production team identified cooling capacity as an area requiring attention during extended operation. Cooler fans and air intake arrangements were reviewed to support stable operation. Any modification must be checked against the cooler design, required airflow, static pressure and the total pellet load.

The following checks help prevent the pelleting section from becoming constrained by downstream equipment:

Customer Feedback on Extended Operation

During follow-up after the equipment had been in service, the production manager reported that the two mills had improved the plant's ability to maintain a planned production schedule. The team valued having separate machines available for different product groups and the ability to schedule maintenance without necessarily stopping all pelleting activity.

The customer also identified cooling performance as an important factor during long operating shifts. After reviewing the cooler fans and air intake arrangement, the plant adjusted the cooling system to improve pellet handling conditions. The experience reinforced the need to evaluate the pellet mill, steam supply, cooling system and conveying equipment as one connected production process.

Actual uptime and output should be assessed using operating logs that distinguish planned production hours, scheduled maintenance, unplanned stoppages and product changeovers. This provides a more useful basis for evaluating reliability than relying on a single uptime percentage without a defined calculation method.

Shipping and Commissioning in Bangladesh

The two SZLH420 poultry feed pellet machines were shipped from Qingdao to Chittagong Port, Bangladesh, before inland transportation to the factory in Gazipur. The installation plan covered the placement of both machines, electrical connections, material inlets and outlets, steam connections, lubrication requirements and interfaces with the existing cooling and conveying systems.

Before commissioning, the plant needed to verify the power supply, protective devices, foundation and alignment, guarding, lubrication and the capacity of the upstream and downstream equipment. Initial operation should be conducted under controlled conditions, followed by gradual adjustment of the feed rate and conditioning settings as the operators confirm stable performance.

Commissioning support also includes operator training on routine inspections, die and roller servicing, safe cleaning procedures and the documentation of operating parameters for each feed type.

Planning the Next Stage of Feed Mill Capacity

With two additional SZLH420 pellet mills incorporated into its wider production system, the Bangladesh manufacturer has a basis for improving scheduling flexibility and expanding its capacity for pelleted poultry feed. The actual benefit depends on how effectively the machines are supplied with prepared mash and how well the cooling, conveying and bulk-handling equipment supports their output.

For other feed manufacturers considering a poultry pellet mill for continuous feed processing, the main selection factors are the required hourly output, feed formulations, pellet diameters, operating hours, upstream mixing capacity and downstream cooling capacity. A reliable production plan must account for all these factors rather than sizing the project around the pellet mill alone.

RICHI Machinery supplies ring die pellet mills and supporting feed processing equipment for commercial feed manufacturers. By reviewing the existing plant layout, raw materials, product specifications and production schedule, the engineering team can help determine an appropriate machine configuration and identify the supporting equipment needed for stable, extended operation.
