The project highlights how efficient post-pelletizing cooling is a critical, yet often underestimated, factor in producing stable, high-energy feed for ruminants in a continental climate with extreme seasonal temperature variations.

Our client operates a sizable commercial beef cattle feedlot, finishing thousands of head annually. To gain greater control over feed costs, quality, and biosecurity, they made a strategic move away from purchasing complete feed and invested in constructing their own on-site feed mill.

The new mill was designed to process locally sourced barley, wheat, alfalfa, and protein supplements into high-density pellets for their growing and finishing pens. The core pelleting equipment was successfully installed. However, the client's initial plan for the cooling stage—relying on a long, unenclosed drag conveyor running through an unheated section of the mill—proved to be a critical flaw during the harsh Kazakh winter.

Hot pellets (75-85°C) exiting the press would freeze onto the cold conveyor, causing massive blockages and shutdowns. In summer, the same system was inefficient, leaving pellets too warm for bulk storage in silos, risking condensation and spoilage. This temperature-sensitive bottleneck threatened the viability of their entire winter feeding program.

To ensure year-round, reliable operation, they urgently needed to purchase a single, enclosed cattle feed pellet cooler. This was an essential corrective purchase, a new and vital piece of equipment to be integrated into their existing line, replacing the failed conveyor system and serving as a controlled, climate-independent cooling stage between the pellet mill and their bulk storage bins.

The enclosed counterflow design was non-negotiable—it isolated the cooling process from the extreme ambient conditions. The flip-plate discharge was selected for its ability to handle the large-diameter pellets reliably. Furthermore, the system was specified with options for modulating the fan speed and potential partial air recirculation to prevent overcooling and freezing of pellets in winter, a crucial consideration for the Kazakh climate.

The final leg of the journey was via a Caspian Sea vessel to the Port of Aktau, Kazakhstan's main seaport on the Caspian. From Aktau, the cargo was transported by rail and then truck to the client's facility in the northern region—a well-established corridor for heavy equipment imports into Kazakhstan.
