This is a project regarding a carrot strip belt dryer in the Netherlands. A small pet treat manufacturer in the province of South Holland, Netherlands, near Rotterdam, was producing natural dried carrot strips for rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters. The challenge was preserving the bright orange color, natural sweetness, and nutritional value of fresh carrots. High-temperature drying turned the carrots brown, destroyed vitamins, and created a bitter taste that small pets rejected.
The production manager (let's call her Femke) explained the challenge: "Small pets are picky eaters. They prefer bright colors and natural sweetness. Our existing hot air dryer was running at 120°C. The carrot strips came out brown, shriveled, and bitter. The rabbits wouldn't eat them. We needed a low-temperature dryer that would preserve the natural qualities of fresh carrots."
The company produces about 2,000 tons annually of natural treats for small pets – carrots, apples, parsnips, and other vegetables. Their products are sold in pet stores across the Benelux region and Germany.
Femke looked for a drying system that could operate at 50-60°C to preserve color, flavor, and nutrients. She found the DHG-400 belt dryer from RICHI.
Name:
Carrot Strip Dryer
Country:
Netherlands
Date:
2025
Capacity:
Flexible
Model:
DHG-400
Main Motor Power:
40kW
Low temperature:
55-60°C
drying area:
13 m²
From the belt dryer table, the DHG-400 (electrically heated) was selected. Why this model?
Femke chose the electric model because their facility had no steam boiler. The DHG-400 runs on electricity only.
The Netherlands is a major carrot producer. Femke's company sources:
The carrot processing:
The challenge is removing 75-80% of the water without damaging the product.
The DHG-400 carrot strip belt dryer arrived at the Port of Rotterdam – Europe's largest port.
Shipping time from Qingdao to Rotterdam is about 30-35 days. The machine was packed in a 20-foot container with:
Customs clearance in Rotterdam took about 3 days. Total landed cost was about 20% higher than the FOB price.
Installation took two weeks. Femke's team prepared a concrete foundation – the DHG-400 is about 6 meters long. They poured a 150mm reinforced slab.
The electrical hookup required 400V, 50Hz three-phase (Dutch standard). The 40kW heater required a 100-amp breaker.
The first test run was with fresh carrot strips at 88% moisture. The strips were spread on the belt (single layer, not touching). Belt speed was set to 35 minutes per layer – total drying time 175 minutes across 5 layers. Air temperature: 55°C. Output moisture: 11%. Color: Bright orange. Flavor: Sweet, natural. Perfect.
After six months of operation, Femke documented the following results:
Before (hot air dryer – 120°C):
After (DHG-400 belt dryer – 55°C):
Production output:
Quality improvements:
Here's what Femke said after six months (paraphrased from a conversation, translated from Dutch):
"Our hot air dryer was destroying the carrots. High temperature turned them brown and bitter. Small pets wouldn't eat them. Customers complained. We were losing money.
The DHG-400 changed that. Low temperature (55°C) preserves the natural color and flavor. The carrot strips come out bright orange and sweet. Small pets love them. Our customers love them.
The 5-layer belt gives us 175 minutes of gentle drying at low temperature. No scorching, no browning. The uniform airflow preserves the shape.
A few operational notes: The strips need to be spread in a single layer – no stacking. If they overlap, they stick together. The belt speed is critical – too fast and they're under-dried, too slow and they're over-dried. We check moisture every hour. The belts need cleaning daily – carrot residue builds up.
Would I recommend this machine? Yes. For any vegetable drying application, low-temperature belt drying is essential for preserving natural color and flavor. The DHG-400 paid for itself in four months."
Carrots have specific drying requirements. Here's why 55°C is ideal:
Color preservation: Carotenoids (beta-carotene) degrade above 70°C. At 55°C, 90% of color is preserved. At 120°C, only 30% remains.
Flavor preservation: Natural sugars caramelize above 80°C, creating a bitter taste. At 55°C, sugars remain sweet.
Nutrient retention: Vitamin A (from beta-carotene) is heat-sensitive. Low-temperature drying preserves 85-90% of vitamins.
Shape retention: High-temperature drying causes rapid shrinkage and warping. Low-temperature drying allows slow, uniform moisture removal.
Femke's lab results:
| Quality Attribute | Hot Air Dryer (120°C) | Belt Dryer (55°C) | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color retention | 30% | 90% | +60% |
| Vitamin A retention | 48% | 88% | +40% |
| Natural sugar retention | 55% | 92% | +37% |
| Palatability (pet acceptance) | 60% | 95% | +35% |
The DHG-400 carrot strip belt dryer's 5-layer design allows extended drying at low temperature:
Constant low temperature prevents color degradation. Extended time (175 minutes) allows thorough drying without high heat.
Carrot strips cannot be stacked during drying. Femke's procedure:
The DHG-400's belt width (0.8m) allows Femke to dry about 2,000 strips per hour.
Before drying, Femke blanches the carrot strips in steam for 2-3 minutes. Blanching:
The blanching system cost €12,000 (purchased separately) – well worth the investment.
The DHG-400 shipped from Qingdao to Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Shipping time from Qingdao to Rotterdam is about 30-35 days. The route goes through the South China Sea, past Singapore, across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, and across the Mediterranean to Northern Europe.
The carrot strip belt dryer was packed in a 20-foot container. Customs clearance in Rotterdam took about 3 days. Total landed cost was about 20% higher than the FOB price.
The truck transport from Rotterdam to South Holland was short – about 30km, roughly 30 minutes.
For a vegetable drying operation producing natural pet treats, low-temperature belt drying is essential.
Consider the DHG-400 if:
Consider a larger model (DHG-500 or DHG-1000) if:
For Femke's small pet treat plant, the DHG-400 was the right investment. It preserved natural color (90% retention) and flavor, improved pet acceptance from 60% to 95%, and paid for itself in 4-5 months.
If you're a small pet treat manufacturer drying vegetables, don't use high-temperature dryers. Heat destroys color, flavor, and nutrients. The result is brown, bitter treats that pets reject.
The DHG-400 carrot strip belt dryer in Netherlands operates at 55°C – well below the degradation temperature for carotenoids and natural sugars. The 5-layer design provides 175 minutes of gentle drying. The result is bright orange, sweet, nutritious treats that small pets love.
For vegetable drying, the math is simple: low temperature = natural color = better flavor = happier pets = repeat customers.
