Under strict EU and regional regulations, the traditional routes of agricultural land application were facing increasing scrutiny and restrictions due to concerns about microplastics, PFAS (forever chemicals), and heavy metal accumulation in soils. The utility's forward-looking strategy was to invest in advanced thermal treatment to both hygienize the biosolids and create a valuable, nutrient-rich ash (phosphorus and potassium) for the fertilizer industry, while eliminating organic pollutants.

The critical step before high-temperature treatment (like gasification or pyrolysis) was efficient and hygienic drying. Their existing centrifuge-dewatered biosolids had a stubborn 75-80% moisture content. To make the subsequent thermal processes energy-efficient and technically feasible, they needed a robust, large-scale drying system that could operate continuously and meet the highest hygiene standards.

This led to the procurement of a state-of-the-art biosolid belt dryer. The utility, in partnership with a private waste-to-energy operator, made the decision to install a single, very large biosolid belt dryer as the central pre-processing unit for their new thermal recovery facility. This single machine was the cornerstone of a new, multi-million-euro infrastructure project designed to future-proof their sludge management for decades.

This industrial biosolid dryer was selected as a single unit because its immense capacity was engineered to match the aggregated daily sludge inflow, ensuring a continuous feed to the downstream gasifier.

Building multiple smaller dryers would have complicated layout, increased energy integration points, and raised capital costs unnecessarily. The single, robust line embodied the project's philosophy of centralized, high-tech processing for maximum efficiency and control.

Material Specifics and the Gateway-to-Energy-Recovery Drying Intent

The raw material is anaerobically digested and dewatered municipal sewage sludge (Class B biosolids). It is a homogeneous, paste-like material with high moisture content (78-82%) and must be handled with strict bioaerosol and odor control. The drying intent is hygienic drying and mass reduction to create a stable, granulated feedstock.

The process must reduce moisture to below 10% to transform the sludge into a free-flowing, biologically inert granulate (often called "bio-coal") with a high calorific value, perfectly suited as a feed for the high-temperature gasifier to recover energy and concentrate nutrients in the ash.
