Automatic Pallet Recycling Line in Serbia | RICHI Machinery

OVERVIEW

For a timber-waste recovery operator in Serbia, the problem was not a lack of wood to process. It was the amount of time and floor space occupied by damaged pallets waiting to be dismantled, sorted or removed from the site. Warehouses, distribution facilities, furniture manufacturers and building-material suppliers all handle wooden packaging, but once pallets become broken or unsuitable for reuse, they can quickly turn into a bulky waste stream.

The operator planned to expand its wood-recycling business by introducing an automatic pallet recycling line rather than continuing to depend on manual dismantling and occasional crushing services. The investment included a heavy-duty pallet crusher, feeding and discharge conveyors, and a dust collection system. These components were configured to work together, allowing the business to move beyond an isolated crushing operation toward a more organized material-handling process.

The selected primary machine was the RICHI RIBPC 1250×450 pallet crusher. Its main motor is rated at 132 kW, with an 11 kW and 7.5 kW feeding motor arrangement, a 2.2 kW hydraulic pump motor, a 1.5 kW discharge conveyor motor and 24 hammers. The target output is approximately 2–4 cm wood chips, subject to confirmation of the screen configuration and actual feedstock characteristics.

The purpose of the project was straightforward: accept suitable discarded wooden pallets, convey them to the crusher, reduce them to manageable chips and transfer the material to a designated collection point while controlling dust around the processing area. For a business considering an automatic pallet recycling line in Serbia, this type of integrated configuration can address several operational bottlenecks at once, without requiring every stage of the wider recycling business to be newly purchased.

Why a Serbian Recycling Business Needed a Complete System

Serbia occupies an important position in the Western Balkans, with commercial activity connected to manufacturing, warehousing, construction, retail distribution and regional freight movement. Wooden pallets circulate through these industries to support the storage and transport of packaged goods, machinery, building materials and consumer products. Their condition varies considerably by the time they reach a recovery operator.

Some pallets can be repaired and returned to service. Others have broken deck boards, split stringers, loose joints or damage caused by repeated forklift handling. A smaller proportion may be unsuitable for repair because of extensive breakage, contamination or inconsistent construction. The operator's first task is therefore to separate reusable pallets from those that genuinely need to be recycled.

Before the investment, the business handled its rejected timber through a combination of manual sorting, dismantling and outsourced or intermittent size reduction. This arrangement made it difficult to maintain a consistent flow of material. Pallets accumulated in the receiving area, workers had to move them several times, and the crushing stage could not always keep pace with incoming loads.

Purchasing a standalone crusher would have addressed the size-reduction bottleneck, but it would not have solved every handling issue. Workers would still have needed to move pallets toward the machine, transfer crushed material away from the discharge point and manage dust around several separate working areas.

The buyer therefore selected an automatic pallet recycling system with coordinated feeding, crushing, discharge and dust collection. The goal was not to eliminate all manual work. Pallet inspection, removal of unsuitable materials, maintenance and finished-chip handling still require people. Instead, the system was intended to reduce repeated manual movement and establish a more predictable processing sequence.

What the Automatic Pallet Recycling Line Includes

The line was designed around four principal equipment groups. The crusher performs the main size-reduction work, the feeding conveyor provides a controlled route into the processing area, the discharge conveyor moves the finished chips away from the machine, and the dust collection equipment helps manage airborne particles generated during handling and crushing.

These components need to be selected as one working arrangement. Conveyor dimensions, transfer heights, discharge positions and dust extraction points affect how the line operates as a whole. If the feeding conveyor delivers material faster than the crusher can accept it, pallets may accumulate at the inlet. If the discharge conveyor is poorly positioned or undersized for the required flow, chips can build up and interrupt production.

The dust collection system also needs to match the process layout. Dust may be released when dry wood breaks apart, when material falls from a conveyor and when crushed chips are discharged into a container or storage area. Capturing dust at suitable points is generally more effective than relying on general ventilation alone.

The final system arrangement should be confirmed using the actual site layout, power supply, feedstock dimensions and target output. The equipment package is therefore more than a list of individual machines: it is a coordinated material-handling system in which each component must support the next stage.

Primary Equipment: RICHI RIBPC 1250×450 Pallet Crusher

The RIBPC 1250×450 Pallet Shredder is a heavy-duty crusher intended for the preliminary crushing of wooden waste such as damaged pallets, nailed wooden boards and other suitable wood components. For this Serbian project, the model was selected to handle a mixed stream of rejected pallets rather than clean, uniform timber alone.

The machine has a 1250 × 450 mm feed opening and a 132 kW main motor. Its feeding system uses an 11 kW motor and a 7.5 kW motor, while the hydraulic pump motor is rated at 2.2 kW. A 1.5 kW discharge conveyor motor supports the machine's discharge arrangement, and the crushing assembly contains 24 hammers.

High-strength alloy-steel hammers undergo quenching treatment to improve their wear resistance. The detachable hammer arrangement makes inspection and replacement more convenient during routine maintenance. Because the feedstock can contain nails and screws, the machine is designed for suitable nailed wood waste; however, it should not be treated as a general-purpose metal crusher. Large metal objects, chains, reinforcement bars and other unsuitable contaminants must be removed before feeding.

The crusher's reinforced housing is designed for demanding impact loads. Carbon dioxide gas-shielded welding and overall annealing are specified to help reduce residual stress associated with fabrication and improve structural stability. Sealed bearings and the specified dust- and water-resistant design features help protect critical components under industrial working conditions.

The equipment also includes automatic overload protection. This helps protect the machine when abnormal loading occurs, but it does not remove the need for proper feed preparation, guarding and safe operating procedures. Operators should investigate repeated overload trips rather than continually restarting the machine without identifying the cause.

The supplied specifications do not state a rated hourly throughput for this crusher or the complete recycling line. Actual capacity depends on pallet construction, wood thickness, moisture, the proportion of blocks and boards, feeding conditions, screen selection and the arrangement of the downstream equipment. A project-specific capacity should be confirmed by RICHI Machinery rather than estimated from motor power alone.

From Incoming Pallets to 2–4cm Wood Chips

The processing sequence begins before a pallet reaches the conveyor. Incoming pallets are inspected to identify those that can be repaired or reused. Damaged pallets selected for recycling are checked for oversized metal pieces, stones, concrete fragments and other contaminants that could damage the equipment or compromise the intended recycling route.

Once accepted, the pallets are transferred to the feeding section. The conveyor provides a more organized route toward the crusher and reduces the need for workers to repeatedly carry individual pieces to the feed opening. The feeding arrangement must be operated within the machine's permitted conditions, particularly when pallets vary in size, thickness and structural strength.

Inside the crusher, the hammer assembly breaks the wooden components into smaller pieces. The internal screen can be configured according to the intended product size, with approximately 2–4 cm chips serving as the target for this project. The actual particle-size distribution must be verified during commissioning because the condition and construction of incoming pallets influence the result.

After crushing, the discharge conveyor carries the chips away from the machine toward the designated collection area. This helps prevent material from accumulating directly below the discharge point and supports a more orderly flow of finished material.

The dust collection equipment operates as part of the processing arrangement, with extraction points selected according to the locations where dust is likely to escape. Transfer points and chip discharge areas deserve particular attention because material falling between different levels can generate airborne particles.

The system is designed to reduce repeated handling, not to remove every manual task. Workers still need to inspect incoming material, manage rejected feedstock, monitor the machine, maintain the equipment and ensure that the finished chips are collected safely.

Why the Feedstock Mix Matters

The planned feedstock consists mainly of damaged wooden pallets from distribution, warehouse and manufacturing operations. The mix can include softwood pallet boards, thicker stringers, broken blocks and occasional hardwood components, depending on the suppliers served by the recycling business. These materials do not behave identically during crushing.

Thin boards may break down differently from thick blocks. Pallets with closely spaced nails or metal plates require more careful inspection than relatively clean timber. Moisture also affects handling and storage: wet pallets may be heavier and more difficult to store, while very dry and brittle wood may generate more airborne dust.

Wooden packaging from machinery and building-material deliveries may also enter the recovery stream, provided it is compatible with the intended recycling route. Painted, laminated, preservative-treated or chemically contaminated pieces should be identified separately rather than mixed automatically with clean wood.

The operator should maintain a clear distinction between material that can be reused, material that is suitable for crushing and material that requires a separate disposal or treatment route. Crushing changes the size of the material; it does not remove chemical contamination or make unsuitable wood appropriate for every downstream application.

This sorting discipline also supports equipment performance. Removing large metal objects and mineral contaminants reduces the risk of damage, while a more consistent feedstock makes it easier to assess processing capacity, wear-part life and the quality of the finished chips.

Dust Collection Is an Essential Part of the Line

The dust collection system was included because dust management is a practical concern in pallet recycling. Dry timber can release fine particles during crushing, and additional dust may appear when chips transfer between conveyors or fall into a collection area. A crusher with dust-resistant component design does not, by itself, guarantee that the entire processing area will remain dust-free.

The collection arrangement should be designed around the actual locations of dust generation. Depending on the site layout and material characteristics, extraction may be required near the crusher, conveyor transfer points and the finished-chip discharge area. Enclosures and carefully positioned collection hoods can help direct dust toward the extraction system instead of allowing it to disperse throughout the workshop.

The extraction equipment must be matched to the process rather than selected solely by nominal fan power. Airflow requirements, duct layout, filter selection, maintenance access and the characteristics of the wood waste all affect the suitability of the system. The buyer should disclose whether the incoming material includes painted, treated or contaminated wood so that the dust-control arrangement can be evaluated appropriately.

Dust control also involves housekeeping and worker protection. Accumulated wood dust should be removed using suitable procedures, and the installation should be assessed for applicable fire and combustible-dust risks. The collection system should not be described as eliminating all dust emissions; its effectiveness needs to be assessed under actual operating conditions.

Where the Recycled Wood Chips Can Go

The immediate output from this line is an intermediate recycled wood material rather than a finished consumer product. Approximately 2–4 cm chips are easier to store and transport than intact broken pallets, but their final commercial use depends on composition, cleanliness, moisture and the requirements of the receiving facility.

One possible route is further processing at a wood-recycling plant. The chips can be screened or reduced to a smaller size when a downstream manufacturer requires a more controlled particle distribution. Whether an additional hammer mill or screening stage is justified depends on actual customer specifications and the value added by further processing.

Clean wood may be suitable for certain industrial recycling applications, including selected composite-wood or panel-manufacturing processes, where the receiving facility accepts the material. Such applications should not be assumed for every pallet stream, especially when the material contains paint, adhesives, laminates or chemical treatments.

Another possible route is an approved biomass application using suitable, uncontaminated wood. However, not all construction or packaging wood is suitable for fuel. Treated, painted or contaminated timber must not be sent to a fuel application simply because it has been converted into chips. The operator should verify the feedstock's suitability and comply with applicable environmental and product requirements.

For this reason, the recycling business should establish its intended outlets before committing to a final screen specification. If buyers need coarse chips, additional grinding may be unnecessary. If a buyer requires a smaller and more consistent particle size, a secondary processing stage can be considered after the demand is confirmed.

Why the Buyer Purchased an Automatic Pallet Recycling Line

The purchase decision was based on the need to improve the complete handling sequence rather than on crushing performance alone. A standalone machine could reduce pallet size, but it would leave the operator responsible for organizing feeding, moving the output and managing dust through separate arrangements.

By purchasing the crusher together with feeding and discharge conveyors and dust collection equipment, the business could plan the working area as one system. This approach helps define where pallets are inspected, where accepted material enters the line, where chips are discharged and where dust is collected.

The integrated arrangement also gives the operator a clearer basis for measuring the investment. Relevant operating records include the quantity of accepted pallets processed, the proportion rejected during sorting, actual operating hours, electricity consumption, downtime, hammer wear, dust collector maintenance and the amount of finished material accepted by downstream buyers.

These records are more useful than a nominal motor rating when evaluating operating costs. They also help determine whether the next investment should be a secondary crusher, a screen, additional storage or a change in the dust collection arrangement.

RICHI Machinery can assist with reviewing feedstock dimensions, crusher selection, conveyor layout, screen requirements, electrical loads and maintenance access. The purpose of this technical support is to make sure the line suits the actual site and material stream, rather than treating each machine as an unrelated purchase.

Manufacturing, Installation and Technical Support

For an integrated recycling line, equipment selection is only one part of the project. The receiving site needs sufficient room for pallet inspection, safe access to the crusher, conveyor clearances, chip collection and maintenance. The floor and supporting structures must be suitable for the installed equipment and its operating loads.

Before shipment, the configuration should be checked against the approved order, including the crusher model, motor ratings, conveyor arrangement, dust collection equipment and agreed electrical requirements. Packing and spare-parts planning should also account for the equipment that will be required for routine maintenance.

At installation, the crusher, conveyors and dust extraction equipment should be aligned and checked as a coordinated system. Guards, emergency stops, interlocks where provided and other safety devices must be verified before operation. Commissioning should include checks of the feed path, discharge flow, dust collection performance and the condition of the finished chips.

The operator should receive clear guidance on safe feeding, overload response, inspection intervals, hammer replacement and the isolation procedures required before maintenance. These procedures are particularly important for a system that combines several powered machines and conveyors.

RICHI's technical team can also help review operating issues after startup. If the system experiences frequent blockages, excessive dust escape or inconsistent chip size, the cause should be assessed across the whole process. The issue may relate to feedstock preparation, conveyor speed, screen selection, extraction layout or operating practice rather than to the crusher alone.

Customer Evaluation: What Matters After Startup

For this project, the most useful acceptance criteria are practical: whether the line moves accepted pallets through the intended sequence, whether the finished chips meet the target size, whether the conveyors prevent unnecessary handling and whether the dust collection arrangement performs adequately under real operating conditions.

The buyer should also assess whether the system is easy to inspect and maintain. Access to hammers, bearings, conveyors and dust collection components affects routine service work. A layout that appears compact on paper may be inconvenient if workers cannot reach wear parts safely or if collection containers cannot be exchanged without interrupting the line for long periods.

Customer feedback should be documented after commissioning, using actual operating observations rather than assumed benefits. A useful evaluation records changes in material accumulation, labour requirements, chip consistency, dust control and maintenance frequency. No measured throughput, cost saving or customer quotation is claimed here because verified operating records have not been supplied.

This approach gives the buyer a credible way to determine whether the automatic pallet recycling line in Serbia is meeting its objectives and what adjustments, if any, are justified after the first operating period.

Shipping from Qingdao Port to Serbia

The equipment is planned for shipment from Qingdao Port in China. Serbia is a landlocked country, so the selected maritime gateway for this project is the Port of Bar in Montenegro, subject to confirmation by the freight forwarder based on the available shipping service and the final delivery arrangements.

Before dispatch, the equipment packing list, shipping documents, spare-parts package and electrical specifications should be checked against the order. The buyer should also prepare the installation area, power supply, lifting arrangements, conveyor foundations where required and sufficient space for pallet staging and finished-chip collection.

The site preparation plan should include the dust collection installation and safe maintenance access. This is particularly important because the purchase covers an integrated system, not just the main crusher.

A More Organized Approach to Pallet Recycling

The RICHI automatic pallet recycling line in Serbia was conceived around a practical operating requirement: process rejected wooden pallets more systematically by combining crushing, conveying and dust collection in one coordinated arrangement.

The RIBPC 1250×450 pallet crusher machine provides the main crushing function, with a 132 kW motor, 24 hammers and a target output of approximately 2–4 cm wood chips. The feeding and discharge conveyors support material movement, while the dust collection equipment addresses airborne particles generated at relevant points in the process.

The line's actual throughput and operating economics must be confirmed under the buyer's working conditions. Those results depend on the feedstock mix, material preparation, operating schedule, screen configuration and the performance of the complete system.

For recycling businesses evaluating a pallet recycling plant, the key is to specify the entire process around the material that will actually arrive at the site. Photographs of representative pallets, the largest component dimensions, information about nails and coatings, target chip size and the intended downstream application all help RICHI Machinery assess the appropriate equipment configuration.

A properly planned system can provide a more organized route from rejected pallets to usable recycled wood material. With clear feedstock controls, coordinated conveying, suitable dust collection and a realistic maintenance plan, the operator has a practical foundation for developing its wood-recycling operation without investing in unnecessary processing stages at the outset.
