Tanzania Customer Upgrades Flat-Die Feed Line to 3-4 T/H Commercial Feed Mill

A RICHI customer in Tanzania is expanding from a small flat-die feed pellet line to a 3-4 T/H commercial animal feed mill, with installation of the new production system currently underway. The upgrade follows the development of the customer's feed business: the existing line provided an entry point into pellet production, but its capacity and finished-feed performance were no longer sufficient for the scale and product consistency required in the next stage of the business.

The new project is therefore more than a capacity increase. The customer is moving from small-scale pellet processing toward a commercial feed production model, requiring a production system designed for higher throughput, more stable continuous operation and better control over finished feed quality.

The Existing Flat-Die Line Had Reached Its Practical Limit

Flat-die pellet equipment can be a practical solution when feed demand is limited and the customer wants to begin pellet production with a relatively simple system. For this Tanzania customer, however, business development gradually changed the requirements placed on the equipment.

Increasing production demand made the capacity limitation more visible, while expansion into commercial feed production placed greater emphasis on pellet consistency, continuous operation and repeatable production between batches. Continuing to enlarge the business around the same small flat-die configuration would not provide the production platform the customer needed.

RICHI therefore developed the expansion around a new 3-4 T/H feed mill rather than simply adding another small pellet machine to the existing setup.

Moving from Small-Scale Pelleting to Commercial Feed Production

A commercial feed mill has different operating priorities from a small pellet-making unit. The customer is no longer considering only whether raw materials can be converted into pellets. Production efficiency, formula consistency, equipment coordination, labor organization and the ability to supply customers reliably all become more important.

The upgraded animal feed pellet production line therefore uses a ring-die pelleting route suited to the new production scale. Upstream grinding and mixing need to provide prepared feed consistently, while downstream cooling, screening and material handling must keep pace with pellet production.

The objective is to create a balanced 3-4 T/H system rather than allowing one high-capacity machine to operate between undersized upstream and downstream sections.

Why the Upgrade Is About Feed Quality as Well as Capacity

The decision to expand also reflects the customer's transition toward selling feed commercially. When feed is produced mainly for limited internal use, an operator may accept more manual intervention and wider variation between production runs. Commercial customers, however, expect a more consistent product.

Feed quality still depends heavily on formulation and raw material control, but processing consistency is also important. Appropriate grinding supports subsequent mixing and pelletizing; uniform mixing helps distribute ingredients through the batch; stable feeding and conditioning support ring-die pellet production; and cooling and screening help deliver a more consistent finished product.

The upgrade therefore addresses both sides of the customer's requirement: more tonnes of feed per production day and a process better suited to repeatable commercial manufacturing.

3-4 T/H Changes the Daily Production Model

At the new capacity, an eight-hour production shift corresponds to a theoretical output of approximately 24-32 tons. Actual production will depend on formula, pellet specifications, changeovers, operating efficiency and maintenance, but the increase changes how the customer needs to organize the business.

Raw materials must be purchased and stored in larger quantities, production scheduling becomes more important, and finished feed needs an appropriate route into storage, packing or dispatch. As sales increase, the customer also needs to coordinate production with inventory rather than simply manufacturing feed whenever a small quantity is required.

The New Plant Is Now in the Installation Stage

Installation is currently focused on turning the new equipment configuration into a connected production system. Main machines need to be positioned according to the layout, while conveyors and other material-handling equipment establish the route between processing stages. Electrical and control connections will then support coordinated operation of the line.

After mechanical installation, the project will move through individual equipment checks and connected testing before production commissioning. At that stage, operating parameters can be adjusted around the customer's actual raw materials and feed formulas.

An Upgrade Path for Growing Feed Businesses

The Tanzania project represents a common decision point for growing feed producers. Starting with small equipment can be appropriate when demand is uncertain or production is primarily for internal use. Once sales volumes increase and customers require more consistent supply, however, simply extending the operating hours of undersized equipment may no longer be economical.
