Canadian Wood Cat Litter Producer Starts 3 T/H Retail Product Trials on New Pine Pellet Line

Retail-product trials have begun at a new 3 t/h pine cat litter production line in Canada following completion of the principal mechanical and electrical commissioning work.

The customer is a wood-products company diversifying into pet supplies using clean pine sawdust and selected untreated softwood fines generated within its own processing network.

Instead of selling all fine wood residue into lower-value bulk markets, the company is developing a packaged absorbent product for pet retailers and private-label customers.

The line is currently testing several wood cat litter specifications before the first routine production campaign begins.

Captive Sawdust Supply Changes the Project Economics

The Canadian customer does not need to purchase its entire raw-material supply from the open market.

Clean pine sawdust is generated within its associated wood-processing activities.

That gives the project a different starting point from a pet-products company that must build an external biomass sourcing network.

Raw-material control remains strict.

Painted wood, treated timber, MDF dust and adhesive-containing panel residues are not included in the approved pine litter material.

Current Trials Compare Product Form, Not Just Tonnes per Hour

The first product program includes pelletized pine litter with different physical specifications.

Trial work is examining how pellet diameter and length influence downstream screening, packaging and the appearance of the final retail product.

The team is also checking how much loose sawdust returns from the screening section.

A plant producing 3 t/h of material is not successful if an unacceptable proportion becomes fines rather than packaged cat litter.

Pine Cat Litter Needs a Different Process from Tofu Litter

The new plant should not be confused with a tofu cat litter production line.

Pine sawdust does not require soybean-fiber formulation, starch addition or the same post-forming drying logic used for many plant-based tofu litter products.

The process is instead built around clean wood preparation, moisture control, pellet formation, cooling, screening and packaging.

This distinction also affects the customer's equipment investment.

Private-Label Orders Will Drive Product Changeovers

The customer expects part of its future volume to come from private-label pet products.

Different buyers may request changes in pellet dimensions, packaging weight or product screening standard.

The plant is therefore being commissioned around more than one SKU.

The current retail trials will establish operating references before larger commercial orders begin.

For RICHI, the Canada project expands the searchable application of the same core pelletizing technology into pine cat litter equipment, wood pellet cat litter production, and wood cat litter manufacturing lines—a very different market from industrial heating pellets despite using a familiar raw-material category.
