Why We Built This Plant: The Cooperativa Context

Let's be honest—we weren't thinking about pets five years ago. We're a grain cooperative. We move corn, wheat, and soy. But by late 2020, the math stopped making sense. Selling raw grain into volatile commodity markets meant we were always price-takers. Meanwhile, every time we turned around, another neighbor was building a feedlot or expanding their poultry operation. The demand for balanced animal nutrition was right in front of us.

Then we looked at the pet food numbers. Argentina has one of the highest dog ownership rates in Latin America. People are treating pets differently now and demand specialized nutrition. Veterinary clinics were stocked with imported premium brands selling at US prices, while the economy segment was full of unbranded bulk feed.

We saw an opportunity to sit in the middle: use our own grains, partner with local meat renderers for protein meals, and produce quality dry dog food that could compete with the multinationals on freshness and price.

The original project plan was ambitious. We considered wet food lines, cat litter, and freeze-dried treats. But we decided to start with dry processing. One line producing 20,000 tons annually to prove the model. That is how our dog food processing plant in Argentina began.

Site and Layout: Working with the Land

The plant sits on 4 hectares of industrial land west of Córdoba city with good road access to RN20 connecting the capital and grain belt.

A dormitory building was also constructed for workers operating the plant around the clock.

Process Flow: From Grain to Bag

  1. Grain intake and cleaning through drum screen and vibratory sieves
