Our client operates a biomass processing facility on the island of Luzon, utilizing abundant local resources like acacia and gmelina wood waste from furniture and milling industries. They identified a gap in the local market for consistently high-quality, durable wood pellets for use in modern pellet stoves and small-scale boilers.
Their newly installed production line was state-of-the-art, featuring a high-quality pellet mill. However, they quickly realized that their initial plan—to let pellets cool passively on a long conveyor in the open, humid air—was a major flaw.
The pellets exited the press at over 85°C and remained warm and soft for too long, leading to deformation, high breakage rates (fines), and most critically, an inability to reduce moisture to a safe storage level in the humid environment. This compromised pellet durability, energy density, and created a mold risk.
To salvage their product quality and brand promise, they urgently needed to purchase a single, dedicated wood pellet cooler. This was an emergency corrective purchase, a vital piece of auxiliary equipment that was not in the original plan but became essential to integrate seamlessly after their pellet mill and before the screening and bagging station.
The material is 6mm diameter premium wood pellets made from a blend of fast-growing Philippine hardwood species. Fresh from the pellet mill, these pellets have a temperature of 85-90°C and contain residual moisture and heat from the densification process.
In the Philippine climate (ambient 30-35°C with 70-80% humidity), the cooling objective is aggressive: to rapidly drop the pellet temperature to within 3-5°C of ambient and achieve a critical moisture reduction of 1-2% to reach a final stable moisture content below 8%. This rapid cooldown is necessary to "set" the lignin binder, maximize pellet hardness (durability), and prevent moisture re-absorption from the humid air.
