Our client is a Cambodian social enterprise focused on providing sustainable energy solutions and creating local employment. They identified the uncontrolled burning of rice husk in fields as both an environmental issue and a wasted resource. Their business model involved setting up a decentralized network of small-scale processing hubs near rice mills to collect, densify, and sell rice husk pellets.

Their initial hub was equipped with a hammer mill, dryer, and a ring-die pellet press capable of handling the abrasive silica-rich husk. However, their first production runs revealed a major problem. The freshly extruded rice husk pellets, while hard due to the natural silica, exited the press at very high temperatures (over 85°C) and were extremely dry and brittle.

Their makeshift cooling solution—spreading the pellets thinly on concrete—was slow, labor-intensive, and caused excessive breakage from repeated raking. The resulting product was a mix of intact pellets and a large amount of dust, which was both a loss of product and a serious respiratory hazard for workers.

From Sihanoukville, the equipment was transported by truck to the client's facility in Battambang.
