This is a project regarding a poultry feed bag filling machine in Egypt. A poultry feed mill in the Nile Delta region of Egypt, about 100km north of Cairo, had a problem that many poultry feed producers face: their broiler starter feed is in crumble form – small, irregular particles that don't flow as freely as pellets.
The mill's old gravity-fed bag filling machine was constantly clogging. The crumbles would bridge in the hopper. Production would stop. Workers would have to poke the hopper with a rod to get the feed moving again.
The mill owner (let's call him Ahmed) explained the situation: "We produce about 18,000 tons of broiler feed per year. About 40% is starter crumbles for young chicks. The crumbles are 1-2mm – smaller than pellets. They don't flow well. Our old gravity scale was a nightmare. Every 20-30 bags, the hopper would bridge. We were losing 1-2 hours of production every day just to clearing clogs."

The DCS-50P arrived at the Port of Alexandria – Egypt's largest port, located on the Mediterranean coast.

Customs clearance in Alexandria took about 6 days. Total landed cost was about 24% higher than the FOB price.
Installation took two days. The old gravity scale was removed. The DCS-50P was positioned on a steel platform. The belt feeder is wider than a gravity hopper, so Ahmed's team had to modify the feed chute from the bin above. A local welder made the modification in a few hours.
The electrical hookup was straightforward (380V, 50Hz three-phase – Egyptian standard). The pneumatic system required clean, dry air at 0.5MPa. Ahmed already had a compressor.
The first test run was with broiler starter crumbles. The belt feeder moved the crumbles smoothly. No bridging. No clogging. Ahmed watched 50 bags being filled without a single interruption. He was impressed.

The machine cost delivered approximately €8,500 (converted). Payback period was about 6-7 months.
Here's what Ahmed said after six months (paraphrased from a conversation, translated from Arabic):
"The old gravity scale was a disaster for crumbles. The feed would bridge every 20-30 bags. My worker had to stop and poke it with a rod to get it moving again. We were losing hours every day.
The DCS-50P with the belt feeder is a different machine. The belt moves the crumbles consistently. No bridging. No clogging. We run for hours without stopping.
The belt feeder is gentle on the crumbles too. The old gravity scale would sometimes crush the crumbles when they bridged and then broke loose. The belt doesn't do that. The crumbles come out intact.
The accuracy is also better. The gravity scale was inconsistent because the flow was inconsistent. The belt provides consistent flow, so the weights are consistent.
A few issues: The belt scraper is not needed for crumbles – we removed it. The belt needs cleaning every few days – crumble dust builds up. We wipe it down with a dry cloth. Takes 5 minutes.
Would I recommend this machine? Yes. For any mill that packages crumbles or any non-free-flowing feed, belt feed is the answer."

After six months of running the DCS-50P, Ahmed shared several observations:
Lesson 1: Belt feed is essential for crumbles. Gravity doesn't work. Don't waste money on a gravity scale if you package crumbles.
Lesson 2: The belt scraper is not always needed. For dry crumbles, remove it. It adds unnecessary friction and wear.
Lesson 3: Dust collection still matters. Even with a belt feeder, crumbles create dust. A dust hood is a good investment.
Lesson 4: Clean the belt regularly. Crumble dust builds up on the belt. Ahmed's team wipes the belt with a dry cloth every 2-3 days. Takes 5 minutes.
Lesson 5: Keep spare belts. The belt will wear over time. Ahmed bought a spare belt with the machine. He expects the first belt to last 2-3 years.
