1 T/H Industrial Animal Bedding Pellet Machine in Slovenia

OVERVIEW

The Industrial Animal Bedding Pellet Machine in Slovenia is planned for a wood-processing business that wants to turn part of its sawmill residues into a consistent bedding product for the equestrian and livestock sectors. The proposed customer already handles beech, spruce and fir timber and has a regular supply of sawdust and small wood residues. Instead of building a new pellet plant from the ground up, the business intends to add one industrial ring-die pellet machine to its existing material-handling operation.

The selected equipment is the RICHI MZLH420, with a reference production capacity of 1.0–1.2 T/H and a 90 kW main motor. The machine will compress prepared, dry wood residues into animal bedding pellets, initially targeting horse stables and other suitable animal-housing applications. The purchase is intended to create an additional outlet for material generated by the customer's existing timber operation, while keeping the initial investment focused on the equipment needed for pelletizing.

A New Product Opportunity for Slovenia's Wood-Processing Sector

Wood processing is a practical starting point for this project because Slovenia has an established forestry and timber industry. Official Slovenian forestry information identifies beech and spruce among the country's important forest species, with fir also present. Sawmills and other timber businesses can generate sawdust, shavings and other residues that need a reliable outlet. The availability of these materials varies by location, season, timber mix and the products manufactured.

The proposed customer is a medium-sized timber processor that handles both coniferous and deciduous logs. Its main business remains timber production rather than pellet manufacturing. During sawing, planing and finishing, the workshop collects beech sawdust, spruce sawdust and fir shavings. Some material is already sold loose, but the customer is considering whether a portion can be converted into a higher-value product for bedding distributors and stable operators.

The commercial reasoning is straightforward. Loose wood residues take up considerable storage volume, and their value depends heavily on local demand, transport costs and material quality. Densifying clean residues into pellets creates a more uniform product that can be weighed, bagged, stacked and supplied in controlled quantities. It does not automatically guarantee a higher profit, but it gives the business another product format to test with customers.

Slovenia's equestrian facilities, private horse owners, riding schools and agricultural businesses provide potential customer groups for wood-based bedding. The project is not designed around the assumption that every stable uses pellets or that all wood species perform equally well. Before commercial sales, the customer will need to assess local preferences for pellet diameter, absorbency, dust levels, bag size and price.

Raw Material Selection: Beech, Spruce and Fir Residues

The proposed feedstock is a dry blend of 50% beech sawdust, 30% spruce sawdust and 20% fir planer shavings, measured by weight. This is a planning blend for the illustrative project rather than a verified customer recipe. Its purpose is to use the wood residues available from the customer's timber operation while maintaining a reasonably consistent feedstock for the pellet mill.

Beech sawdust supplies the principal hardwood fraction, while spruce and fir contribute softwood residues. The final proportions should be adjusted after testing the actual materials. Different species and particle shapes do not necessarily compact in the same way, and a blend that performs well during one production run may require adjustment when the incoming material changes.

The feedstock will come from untreated timber processing. Painted wood, preservative-treated timber, glue-contaminated board waste, demolition debris and material containing unknown chemical residues are excluded. This is an important distinction for animal bedding: the product must be made from suitably clean material, not from an unrestricted mixture of all wood waste generated by a workshop.

Material preparation is handled separately from the MZLH420 wood pellet mill. Sawdust can be screened to remove oversized pieces and foreign objects. Fir shavings that are too long or irregular should pass through an appropriate size-reduction unit, such as a hammer mill, before being blended with the finer fractions. A target around 3 mm or finer can be used as an initial preparation guideline, subject to trials with the actual material and the selected die.

Moisture control is equally important. For this project, the initial operating target is approximately 10–15% moisture in the prepared feedstock. If a batch arrives above 20%, the customer's existing dryer or another suitable drying system should be used before pelletizing. The pellet machine is not a substitute for a dryer, and excessive moisture should not be left for the pressing stage to resolve.

By separating raw-material preparation from pelletizing, the customer can control the main variables before material reaches the machine. A consistent feed blend, suitable particle size and stable moisture level help the operator establish repeatable settings and evaluate the finished pellets more fairly.

Why the MZLH420 Fits This Industrial Bedding Project

The MZLH420 is a ring-die biomass pellet mill designed for suitable prepared biomass materials. In this project, it is supplied without a conditioner and is intended for non-feed applications, including animal bedding and other compatible biomass products. It is not being specified for animal feed manufacture.

The reference capacity of 1.0–1.2 T/H gives the timber processor a more substantial starting point than a small pilot machine, without immediately committing to the output scale of the largest models in the range. Actual production will depend on the feedstock, moisture, particle size, die configuration, feeding stability and operating conditions. The rated range should therefore be treated as a selection reference, not a guaranteed result for every mixture.

The proposed equipment specification is:

The proposed 8 mm pellet diameter falls within the machine's stated 4–12 mm finished-pellet range. It should be confirmed with the intended buyers and the selected die before production. The appropriate diameter is a commercial decision as well as a technical one: a stable operator may have a specific preference, and pellet dimensions influence handling, bagging and the way the material breaks down during use.

The MZLH420's arch-breaker feeder helps reduce material bridging above the feed opening, while the forced feeder supports a controlled supply into the pelletizing chamber. These features are useful when handling low-density wood residues, although the actual feeding performance still depends on particle shape, moisture and material consistency.

How the Customer Will Produce Bedding Pellets

The process begins with the collection of clean sawdust and planer shavings from the timber workshop. The material is checked for contamination, screened and reduced in size where necessary. Moisture is measured before the prepared fractions are blended according to the working formulation.

The mixture then enters the MZLH420. Inside the pelletizing chamber, rollers compress the prepared material through the holes in the ring die, forming cylindrical pellets. Pressure and friction help the particles bind together. The finished product will reflect the properties of the wood, the condition of the feedstock and the operating settings rather than the machine model alone.

After pressing, the pellets should be cooled before screening and packaging. Cooling helps the product reach a more stable condition for handling, while screening separates fines that may be unsuitable for direct sale. Where technically appropriate, some screened fines may be returned to the process under controlled conditions, provided that doing so does not compromise the product.

The customer already has equipment for collecting and moving wood residues, so the project does not automatically require a complete new production line. Existing conveyors and preparation equipment can be retained where their capacity and condition are suitable. Cooling, screening and packing requirements should be checked against the planned output before the machine is commissioned.

For this application, the operator should monitor pellet diameter, pellet durability, fines content, output rate and moisture. If the proportion of beech sawdust changes or the incoming fir shavings become coarser, the machine may need adjustments. Keeping basic production records will help the customer identify the blend and operating conditions that provide the most consistent bedding product.

What Makes the Finished Pellets Useful for Animal Bedding?

The main intended market is horse bedding. Wood-based bedding pellets can be attractive to stable operators because they are compact, easy to portion and convenient to store in bags or bulk packaging. When exposed to moisture, suitable pellets soften and break down, allowing the bedding to be managed according to the stable's normal cleaning and replenishment routine.

However, compactness alone does not determine bedding quality. Buyers also care about dust, fines, absorbency, the behavior of the pellets after wetting and the ease of removing used bedding. A product that arrives in good condition but produces excessive dust during use may not meet the needs of a particular stable. The customer should therefore arrange product trials with representative users before settling on a permanent specification.

Other animal-housing applications may be possible where clean wood bedding is suitable for the species and the management system. The same product should not be promoted as universally appropriate for every animal. Local buyer requirements, animal-housing practices and relevant product standards should guide the final market positioning.

Used bedding may be considered for composting or other managed organic-waste routes, depending on the material composition, manure content, local rules and the receiving facility's requirements. This potential end-of-life route should be assessed separately. It does not mean that every bedding pellet is automatically suitable for fertilizer production or that the finished product can be sold as fertilizer without further processing.

Why Purchase One Machine Instead of Replacing the Existing System?

The customer's investment decision is based on the equipment already available at the timber workshop. Material collection and part of the preparation process are already in place, while pelletizing is the missing operation needed to develop a new product. Purchasing one MZLH420 avoids duplicating existing functions and allows the customer to test a new market without immediately committing to a fully automated plant.

The business can begin by producing a controlled volume, sending samples to selected stable operators and recording their feedback. If customers accept the pellet diameter, absorbency and packaging format, production can be scheduled around the available feedstock and confirmed orders. If the preferred product specification changes, the business can assess the implications before investing in further equipment.

The financial calculation should include more than the pellet machine's purchase price. Electricity, labor, raw-material preparation, drying where required, cooling, screening, packaging, maintenance and storage all affect the cost per tonne. The value of the project will depend on the sale price and the amount of clean, suitable feedstock available throughout the year.

For an industrial customer, it is also important to consider material supply consistency. Sawmill residues can change with the species being processed, timber dimensions and production schedule. If the customer cannot maintain the planned blend, it may need to adjust the formulation or separate different raw-material batches to preserve product consistency.

RICHI's Technical Support Before Delivery

Before confirming the equipment configuration, RICHI Machinery can review representative samples of the beech and coniferous residues, including moisture content, particle size and material cleanliness. This helps determine whether the proposed feedstock is suitable for pelletizing and whether the customer needs to improve screening, size reduction or drying before the machine is installed.

The technical discussion should also cover the required pellet diameter, expected operating hours, electrical supply, feeding arrangement and planned cooling and packaging method. These details help establish whether the MZLH420's reference capacity fits the customer's material flow and whether the supporting equipment can keep up with production.

Die selection should be considered alongside the raw-material blend. Wood species, particle size and moisture influence compression behavior, so a configuration suitable for one material cannot automatically be assumed to produce the same result with another. The final setup should be confirmed against the intended product and actual feedstock.

For an overseas buyer, this preparation provides a clearer scope before shipment. The customer can identify which equipment is included, which functions remain with the existing workshop and which site preparations need to be completed. That approach helps keep a single-machine investment focused while making room for future expansion if the bedding market develops as expected.

Shipment to Slovenia and Installation Preparation

The planned shipping route is from Qingdao Port in China to the Port of Koper, Slovenia's principal international cargo port. Koper is an established maritime gateway for Slovenia and serves as an important connection for cargo moving into Central and Eastern European markets.

Before dispatch, the machine's packing dimensions, shipment weight and delivery terms should be confirmed. The customer should prepare the installation area, electrical connection, material-feeding point and finished-product collection area before the equipment arrives.

Commissioning should include checks of mechanical alignment, electrical connections, feeder operation, die and roller assembly, safety guards and emergency stops. The first production runs should use the agreed dry wood blend, with the operator recording output, pellet diameter, fines content and operating conditions. These records provide a useful baseline for later adjustments and routine maintenance.

Project Feedback and the Next Step

The proposed project gives the timber processor a way to use its own clean wood residues for a product with a different customer base. Rather than depending entirely on loose sawdust sales, the business can evaluate whether bagged or bulk animal bedding pellets offer a commercially viable additional outlet. The MZLH420 is intended to supply the pelletizing stage while the existing workshop continues to handle the operations it already performs effectively.

The most useful performance measures will be practical ones: whether the machine can process the prepared blend consistently, whether the pellets remain intact during handling, how much fines the process produces and whether stable operators are satisfied with the product in actual use. Those results, together with the cost per tonne, will determine whether the customer should increase production or retain the initial scale.

The feedback described in this article is a proposed project narrative, not a verified statement from an actual purchaser. For publication as a completed customer case, it should be replaced or confirmed with the customer's own comments, confirmed equipment records and measured production results.

For timber processors considering an industrial animal bedding pellet machine, the starting point is to identify the available wood species, the condition and moisture of the residues, the intended pellet diameter and the expected production volume. RICHI Machinery can use these details to assess whether the MZLH420 or another model in the MZLH range is better suited to the intended non-feed application.
