Russia has been rapidly modernizing its livestock sector over the past decade, with substantial government support for dairy and beef production. The farm we worked with milks approximately 1,200 Holstein cows and operates a feedlot for 800 head of youngstock.
They grow their own forages—alfalfa, clover, and corn silage—on 3,500 hectares, and they purchase grain supplements from local suppliers. Before upgrading their mixing capacity, they relied on an aging Soviet-era vertical mixer that had inconsistent mixing times, poor discharge efficiency, and frequent breakdowns. The result was variation in feed quality across batches, leading to reduced milk production and health issues in their replacement heifers.

After a thorough consultation and material analysis at our Qingdao testing center, we recommended the SLHJ4A single-shaft double-layer paddle mixer with a 37kW motor and a batch capacity of 2,000 kg per batch.

The Ryazan region has seen significant investment in dairy infrastructure, with several large farms adopting European management practices. The farm we worked with had been mixing feed manually using a front-end loader and an old vertical screw mixer that was prone to leaving unmixed pockets of grain concentrate at the bottom of the batch.
The farm nutritionist estimated that mixing non-uniformity was as high as 15%, meaning some cows received too much grain while others received too little. This led to sub-acute rumen acidosis in high-producing cows and slower growth rates in heifers.
The farm manager needed a mixer that could blend dense materials like ground grain with lighter, fibrous materials like chopped alfalfa and silage without segregation. He also needed the ability to add liquid molasses (up to 5% of the batch) to bind the feed and improve palatability.
The SLHJ4A's double-layer paddle design creates a counter-current mixing action that handles both light and heavy ingredients effectively, with a mixing uniformity coefficient (CV) of under 5% after three to four minutes.
The farm selected the SLHJ4A from our SLHJ series of single-shaft paddle mixers. This model features a direct motor connection, carbon steel construction, and a batch capacity of 2,000 kg. The 37kW motor provides sufficient power to start under full load, which is critical when mixing heavy, wet silage or high-moisture byproducts. The mixer is equipped with a pneumatic discharge gate that opens automatically at the end of each cycle, discharging into a screw conveyor that feeds the TMR wagon.

The farm found that adding the molasses last, after the dry ingredients had already been mixed for 90 seconds, produced the best coating without forming wet balls. The mixer's internal design includes a liquid spraying system with three nozzles that distribute molasses evenly across the moving bed of material.

The farm manager reported that the new mixer reduced batch-to-batch variation significantly. Before, feed samples taken from different parts of the TMR wagon showed dry matter differences of up to 15%.
After installing the SLHJ4A, the dry matter variation dropped to under 5%, well within industry standards. Milk production has increased by about 1.8 liters per cow per day, which the nutritionist attributes to more consistent energy intake across the herd. The heifers are also reaching breeding weight 21 days earlier on average.
Russia's main seaport for containerized cargo in the northwest is St. Petersburg on the Baltic Sea. The SLHJ4A mixer was shipped from Qingdao to St. Petersburg – about 35 days at sea. From St. Petersburg, the customer arranged truck transport to Ryazan, approximately 700 kilometers southeast.
The total transit time was about 48 days. The mixer was shipped disassembled into three main sections: the mixing trough with paddles, the drive motor and gearbox, and the pneumatic discharge assembly. The customer's maintenance team assembled the unit in three days using our detailed video guides.
We spoke with the farm manager about a year after installation. Here is what he told us:
"This feed mixer machine for modern animal farming systems has completely transformed how we prepare feed. Our old Soviet mixer would leave pockets of unmixed grain – you could see them in the TMR wagon. The cows would sort through and eat the grain first, then leave the forage. Now the mix is uniform every time.
The paddles are robust – we have processed over 10,000 batches without any wear issues on the mixing elements. The pneumatic discharge gate has been reliable, though we did replace a solenoid valve once. That was a simple fix.
The farm has since recommended the SLHJ series to two other dairy operations in the Ryazan region, and one of them has already purchased an SLHJ6A for a 3,000-head operation.
