OVERVIEW

A feed mixer machine for consistent feed output quality in Poland was the missing piece for a large swine operation in the Wielkopolska region, near the city of Poznań. Poland is one of the European Union's largest pig producers, with about 11 million head.

The farm we worked with operates a farrow-to-finish facility with 2,500 sows and produces approximately 60,000 finisher pigs annually. However, the farm manager had been facing a recurring complaint from their contract growers: finisher pigs were gaining weight at inconsistent rates across different barns, and feed intake varied significantly even when the same diet formulation was used.

The problem traced back to the farm's old vertical screw mixer, which was producing batches with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 12-14%, meaning that some pigs received a grain-heavy ration while others received a fiber-heavy ration.

Before upgrading, the farm relied on a 20-year-old Polish-made ribbon mixer that had worn bearings and a badly bent ribbon. The discharge gate no longer sealed properly, allowing fines to leak out during mixing.

The nutritionist estimated that feed waste alone cost the operation about 180,000 złoty (approximately $45,000 USD) per year, not including the performance losses from inconsistent nutrition.

The farm manager had been quoted by a German manufacturer for a replacement twin-shaft mixer, but the price—over €45,000—was too high for the farm's current budget. A feed industry consultant recommended RICHI as a reliable and cost-effective alternative.

The farm already had a hammer mill for grinding cereals and a micro-dosing system for vitamins and minerals. They also had a liquid addition system for molasses and fat. What they lacked was a robust mixer that could produce a uniform mash with minimal segregation.

They needed a machine that could handle the wide range of particle sizes in their diet—ground barley (2.5mm), ground wheat (2.0mm), soybean meal (2.5mm), rapeseed meal (3.0mm), and coarse bran (4.0mm)—without allowing the heavier particles to settle.

After analyzing their feed samples at our Qingdao testing facility, we recommended the SLHY2.5L ribbon mixer with an 18.5kW motor and a batch capacity of 1,000 kg (pneumatic discharge).

This model uses a double-helix ribbon design that creates two opposing material flows, effectively homogenizing mixtures with wide particle size distributions. The farm purchased one unit as a direct replacement for their old mixer, not as part of a larger system.

Why Mixing Consistency Directly Affects Pig Performance

Pigs are less selective than poultry, but they still exhibit feed sorting when presented with a heterogeneous mix. More importantly, inconsistent mixing leads to batch-to-batch variation in nutrient density.

The farm nutritionist conducted a feed sampling study and found that crude protein levels in finished feed varied by as much as 2.5 percentage points between batches from the old mixer—a range that violates EU feed labeling regulations. The health consequences included uneven growth, increased medication costs, and higher mortality in the grower barns.

The SLHY series mixers use a specially designed double-helix ribbon. The outer ribbon moves material in one direction while the inner ribbon moves material in the opposite direction, creating a fluidized mixing zone that keeps particles of different densities suspended.

The farm's quality control team tested the first 100 batches from the new mixer and found a CV of 4.2% on average, well below the 7% industry standard for swine feed and consistent enough to meet EU regulatory requirements for complete feeds.

Machine Selection and Mixing Parameters for Swine Rations

The farm selected the SLHY2.5L from our SLHY series of ribbon mixers. The "L" designation indicates a larger effective volume (2.5 cubic meters) for the rated batch size, which allows for gentle mixing and reduced particle degradation.

The 18.5kW motor is gear-driven and operates at a relatively low ribbon speed (28 rpm), which minimizes the breakdown of friable particles like soybean meal. The mixer is equipped with a pneumatic drop-bottom discharge that opens fully in under five seconds.

The mixing parameters that gave the best results were:

One challenge they encountered was the addition of molasses at 3% inclusion. When added too quickly, the molasses would form sticky balls with the ground grain. The solution was to install a heated molasses tank (keeping it at 35°C) and a set of three finer spray nozzles that distribute the liquid evenly across the bed of moving material. After this adjustment, the molasses was uniformly distributed without clumping.

What the Mixed Feed Is Used For

The farm produces three distinct rations for different stages of production:

Sow lactation ration (for farrowing sows):

Finisher ration (for pigs 50-110 kg):

Grower ration (for pigs 25-50 kg):

The farm manager reported that the new mixer reduced batch-to-batch variation dramatically. Before, samples taken from different silos receiving the same formula showed crude protein differences of up to 2.5 percentage points.

After installing the SLHY2.5L mixer machine, the variation dropped to under 0.5 percentage points. This consistency allowed the nutritionist to lower the safety margin on protein inclusion, saving about 90,000 złoty ($22,000 USD) per year in ingredient costs.

Finisher pig growth rates increased from 780 g per day to 850 g per day – a 9% improvement – which the manager attributes primarily to more consistent energy intake across the herd. Days to finish (from 30 kg to 110 kg) dropped by 12 days on average, significantly reducing the farm's cost of production.

Why the Farm Chose the SLHY Series Over Competitors

We spoke with the farm manager about 16 months after installation. Here is what he told us:

The SLHY2.5L gives us the same result batch after batch, day after day. The pigs are growing faster and more uniformly. We have reduced the variation in slaughter weights significantly, which means more pigs falling into the premium price category.

The only maintenance we have performed is lubricating the bearings every 200 hours and tightening the chain drive once. The ribbon shows minimal wear after 5,000 batches. The pneumatic discharge gate has been trouble-free."

The farm has since recommended the SLHY series to two other pig operations in the Wielkopolska region, and one has purchased an SLHY3.5L for a 1-million-bird poultry operation.

Logistics: Shipping from Qingdao to Gdańsk

The SLHY2.5L was shipped from Qingdao to the Port of Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea – about 32 days at sea. Gdańsk is Poland's largest seaport and the main gateway for agricultural imports. From Gdańsk, the customer arranged truck transport to Poznań, approximately 300 kilometers south. The total transit time was about 42 days.

The mixer was shipped in a 20-foot high-cube container, partially disassembled (the ribbon was removed for shipping). The customer's team reassembled the ribbon and connected the motor using our detailed video guide, completing the installation in less than a day.

Plans for a Second Mixer

The farm is now planning to purchase a second mixer – an SLHY3A paddle mixer with a 1,500 kg batch capacity – to separate their sow lactation feed from the grower-finisher feed. Lactation feed is more nutrient-dense and contains higher levels of fat and molasses, which can leave residues in the mixer.

Having dedicated mixers prevents cross-contamination between diets and eliminates the need for a clean-out batch between formula changes. The farm manager estimates that the time savings from having dedicated mixers will allow them to produce an additional 15 tons of feed per day without adding labor.
