A Social Enterprise Creating a New Fuel Supply Chain

Our client is a social enterprise operating in the Mbeya region of southwestern Tanzania. They work with local smallholder farmers to cultivate plots of high-yield Napier grass on marginal land, providing a cash crop while combating soil erosion.

The enterprise's core facility processes this grass into dense pellets, aiming to supply a cleaner-burning alternative to wood charcoal for cooking in urban centers and for use in institutional boilers (e.g., schools, hospitals). Their production line, funded by a blend of impact investment and grants, included a hammer mill, dryer, and a robust pellet mill.

However, in their initial pilot phase, they encountered a major problem: the freshly pelleted Napier grass material, exiting the press at around 85-90°C, was soft, pliable, and retained significant residual heat. Their method of spreading the pellets on a concrete floor to air-cool was slow, led to deformation, and in the tropical humidity, risked mold formation before bagging.

This compromised the pellets' durability, appearance, and shelf life, threatening the commercial viability of the entire model. To scale up from pilot to commercial production, they needed to purchase a single, reliable energy grass pellet cooler.
