This is a project regarding a dairy feed bagging machine in New Zealand. The mill produces about 45,000 tons annually of pelleted feed for dairy cows. Their customers are large dairy farms and feedlots across Canterbury and Otago. These farms don't want 25kg bags. They want 40kg and 50kg bags – fewer bags per ton, less handling, more efficient feeding.

This is a project regarding a dairy feed bagging machine in New Zealand. A dairy feed mill in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island, near Christchurch, had a problem that was both financial and physical.
The mill owner (let's call him Hamish) explained the challenge: "Our old bagging machine could do 40kg bags, but it was slow – about 3-4 bags per minute. To meet demand, we were running two shifts. The night shift was expensive, and the physical toll on workers was high. Lifting 40-50kg bags repeatedly causes injuries. I needed a machine that could handle heavy bags faster, so we could go back to one shift and reduce worker strain."
Hamish had been running the mill for about 15 years. His customers are among New Zealand's largest dairy operations – farms with 1,000-2,000 cows. They buy feed by the pallet, and they expect consistent bag weights.
He looked for a bagging machine that could handle 40-50kg bags at 5-6 bags per minute, with accuracy better than ±100 grams on 50kg.
Name:
dairy feed bagger
Country:
New Zealand
Date:
2025
Capacity:
4-6 bags per minute
Model:
DCS-50K
Daily output :
60-80 tons
Accuracy:
±0.2% dynamic
feed type:
Lactating cow feed, Dairy calf starter
From the DCS series, the DCS-50K (gravity feed, high speed) was selected. Why this model?
Hamish chose the DCS-50K with seam sealing only (sewn bags) – New Zealand dairy bags are standard sewn woven polypropylene.
New Zealand's dairy industry is world-renowned. Hamish's mill produces:
Most production is in 40kg and 50kg bags. The mill runs 10-hour shifts, five days a week.
The raw materials are typical for New Zealand dairy feed:
The pellets are dry (11-12% moisture), hard, durable – free-flowing. Perfect for gravity feed.
The DCS-50K dairy feed bagging machine arrived at the Port of Lyttelton – the main port for Canterbury, located near Christchurch.
Shipping time from Qingdao to Lyttelton is about 25-30 days. The machine was packed in a 20-foot container with:
Customs clearance in Lyttelton took about 4 days. Total landed cost was about 22% higher than the FOB price.
Installation took two days. The old bagging machine was moved to storage (Hamish kept it as a backup). The DCS-50K was positioned on a reinforced concrete slab – 50kg bags are heavy, so the machine needs a solid foundation. His team poured a new slab: 150mm thick with rebar.
The electrical hookup was straightforward (400V, 50Hz three-phase – New Zealand standard). The pneumatic system required clean, dry air at 0.5MPa. Hamish upgraded his compressor with a dryer.
The calibration for 40kg and 50kg was critical. Hamish's team ran 100 test bags at each weight, measuring on a certified scale. Results for 50kg:
After six months of operation, Hamish documented the following results:
Old machine (before):
DCS-50K (after):
Here's what Hamish said after six months (paraphrased from a conversation):
"The old machine was the bottleneck. We were producing 120 tons of feed per day, but the bagging line could only handle 80 tons. We had to run a night shift just for bagging. That's expensive – night shift rates, lighting, supervision, everything.
"The DCS-50K changed that. Now we bag 120 tons in one shift. No night shift. The machine pays for itself in labor savings alone.
"The accuracy is also much better. On 50kg bags, being off by 150 grams doesn't sound like much. But when you bag 2,400 bags a day (120 tons), that's 360 kg of giveaway every day. Over a year, that's 90-100 tons of feed given away. Now we're within 50 grams. That's 120 kg per day. Much better.
"But the biggest win has been worker safety. Lifting 50kg bags repeatedly is hard on the body. Our old machine required workers to lift bags off the scale and onto pallets. The DCS-50K has a roller conveyor that moves bags to the sewing station, and a chute that slides them onto pallets. No heavy lifting. My workers are happier, and we haven't had a back injury since installation.
"A few issues: The bag clamp rubbers wear faster with 50kg bags – the weight puts more stress on them. We change them every 15,000 bags instead of 25,000. We buy them in packs of 10. The machine also needs a solid foundation – the vibration from 50kg bags dropping is significant. Our concrete slab is 150mm thick with rebar. That's fine.
"Would I recommend this machine? Yes. For any dairy feed mill doing heavy bags, the DCS-50K is the right choice. It's fast, accurate, and with the conveyor and chute, it's much safer for workers."
Packing 40-50kg bags is not the same as packing 25kg bags. Here's what Hamish learned:
Hamish's old machine required workers to lift filled bags off the scale and onto pallets. For 50kg bags, that's a lot of heavy lifting. In the year before installation, two workers had back strain injuries.
With the DCS-50K dairy feed bagging machine in New Zealand, Hamish implemented a new workflow:
Total heavy lifting: ZERO. Workers still push and guide bags, but they don't lift them.
Hamish said: "The safety improvement alone was worth the investment. No back injuries in six months. My workers are happier. Less sick leave."
Hamish uses seam sealing only – sewn bags. Why?
The workflow for 50kg bags:
Two operators, 4-5 bags per minute for 50kg. The conveyor and chute eliminate heavy lifting.
The DCS-50K dairy feed bagging machine shipped from Qingdao to Port of Lyttelton, New Zealand – the main port for the Canterbury region.
Shipping time from Qingdao to Lyttelton is about 25-30 days. The route goes through the South China Sea, past Australia, and across the Tasman Sea.
The machine was packed in a 20-foot container. Customs clearance in Lyttelton took about 4 days. Total landed cost was about 22% higher than the FOB price.
The truck transport from Lyttelton to the mill in Canterbury was short – about 20km, roughly 30 minutes.
After six months of running the DCS-50K, Hamish shared several observations:
RICHI provided several services that helped Hamish get the DCS-50K operational:
For a dairy feed mill that packages heavy bags (40-50kg) for feedlots and large farms, the DCS-50K is the recommended choice.
Consider the DCS-50K if:
Consider adding a roller conveyor and pallet chute if:
For Hamish's mill, the DCS-50K was the right investment. It eliminated a night shift, reduced giveaway, improved worker safety, and paid for itself in less than two months.
If you're a dairy feed mill supplying large farms and feedlots, don't underestimate the demands of 40-50kg bagging. The weight changes everything – from machine setup to worker safety.
The DCS-50K gravity-fed bagging machine is designed for heavy bags. It's fast (4-5 bags per minute for 50kg), accurate (±0.2% dynamic), and built for continuous operation.
With a solid foundation, proper anti-shock adjustment, heavy-duty rubbers, and ergonomic conveyors, it will handle heavy bags safely and efficiently.
RICHI offers documentation in English, heavy-duty rubber compounds, and remote support. Contact RICHI Machinery through the website with your bag sizes, annual tonnage, and production capacity for a recommendation. Tell them about your bag weight – 40-50kg bags require different settings than 25kg bags.
