Kenya's coastline is dotted with coconut plantations, but processing was often limited to copra (dried coconut meat) for oil, leaving the massive husks as low-value waste or a source of modest, artisanally extracted coir fiber.
The entrepreneur envisioned a modern, integrated facility that would process the entire coconut husk into high-value products: premium coir fiber for the export market and coir pith (coco peat) for Kenya's own burgeoning horticulture and floriculture industry.
The major technical hurdle was the inefficient and inconsistent sun-drying of the extracted, washed fiber and pith, which led to quality degradation, mold, and an inability to guarantee the moisture specifications demanded by international buyers.
To establish a reliable, year-round operation that could serve both export and domestic markets with consistent quality, they needed a mechanical drying solution. This led to the investment in a coconut fiber belt dryer. The strategic decision was made to purchase two coconut fiber belt dryers as the core processing units for their new, dedicated coir production line.
This dual-unit setup was crucial to handle the expected volume from multiple satellite husk collection points and to allow for the separate, optimized drying of the different coir fractions (long fiber vs. fine pith) within the same facility.

For this Kenyan venture, success depended on achieving both scale and product flexibility. Investing in two coconut fiber belt dryer units provided a clear path to both. One belt dryer for coconut fiber could be dedicated to producing the longer, stronger "bristle" fiber prized by international manufacturers of brushes, mattresses, and geotextiles.
The other could be optimized for drying the finer "mattress" fiber and the coir pith, which is in high demand from local rose and vegetable greenhouse growers around Lake Naivasha. This separation ensured that fiber quality for export was not compromised by pith dust, and that the pith for local use was dried to the perfect moisture for soil amendment.
Two machines also secured the plant's output against maintenance downtime, a critical consideration for fulfilling export contracts.
